Upgrading Alternator wire...
Gday just wondering how would I go about upgrading my alternator positive reg wire on my VR. It's the white one that runs from the top of the alternator from the regulator to the positive on the battery...(small white one going from the plug)
Is there a way to remove it from the brown plug? I've tried pinching the wire tabs but cant get to to come through...What is the best way to do this? Would 8 gauge be too big for replacement? The wire is perished (showing the wire through the outer shell) So I thought I would just upgrade it to something larger to fix my lights dimming and charge the battery more efficiently etc... It really just seems too small. oh and what does the big red one on the back do???
Any thoughts are great.
Cheers.

If you can't remove the plug easily, I'd cut the wire and take the whole lot to an Auto Electrician and get replacement wire and plug. Reckon that's the easiest, quickets and neatest way out.

yeah I can disconnect the plug from the alternator but can't disconnect the charge wire from the plug...it just wont pull through. I would rather do it myself...

i beleive that wire only senses the voltage in the main circuit for the regulator to decide on the output of the alternator. the big red cable is the actual cable that carries the power from the altenator to the battery.
i actually traced out that white wire through my sapre loom a littlw while ago, it takes a hell tour around the loom. a shorter wire wouldn't hurt it i'm sure

I have an issue with mine, an auto eleccy cut a section out of the wire and replaced it. Helped, but still had an issue. He suggested I get some fairly thick wire and run direct from the battery + to the alternator +

are you refering to the main feed cable? it certainly wouldn't hurt. it'a a pain to do however, getting the old cable out of the loom. would be simple if oyu just cut both ends off and run a new cable outside the original loom

thats what he said- a single heavy wire from the batt + direct to the alternator. In total somewhere around 200mm of cable from memory. I just got a premade battery cable with a lug each end. I am starting to wonder if that is overkil...

considering all the power from the alternator goes through that cable, slightly larger is better then slightly to small. overkill never hurt anybody

So the small little white wire running from the reg plug I shouldn't worry about upgrading to something bigger yeah?
