aldl cable!
G'day,
I need a list of parts that I need to finish my aldl cable.
So far I have the 16 pin plug, the max232 chip, a socket for the chip, a suitable circuit board, the d-sub plug and shielded cable.
The only problem is when reading the howto I have a brain fart and have probs figuring out what else I need,
I know I need a transistor to regulate the voltage, a coupla caps(tantalum I think) and some resistors and stuff.
I would really appreciate it if someone could make it simple and give me a list of the parts I need and quantities of the needed items.
Thanks heaps.

Bah, who needs a max232,
I just made this circuit:
http://www.home.aone.net.au/~techedge/vehicle/2tran.gif
2 transistors, 2 resistors and a diode,
bought a 9 pin serial plug and made the circuit free air and squished it into the serial plug. use sheilded cable between the laptop and car otherwise you will get bad frames and the data link will drop out all the time.
only downside is that you need an older laptop with a serial port.
I have had that circuit working on a VN, VR, VS, and VX in Efi live. Nice simple cheapo way out.

Jayme, did that one work on the VR, VS, VX too? I thought it was only for the VN?

There is one floating around with only one transistor, which is why it only works on the vn/vp as it only needs to read the data stream, not write to it.
The circuit I posted also has a 2nd transistor which allows 2 way communication for the laptop to be able to signal the vr/vs/vx ecu to begin aldl.
in short - yes it works fine on the vr/vs/vx

Ok, so I think the trannys are npn, its been a while is that correct?
Also what type of diode should I use?
Cheers.

its been so long that I dont remember what I bought but I just went and ripped it open to get some part numbers.
my transistors are: 2N 3004 610
I think the diode is: 1N4148 (the writing is sooo small)
and 4 10k resitors (one is for bridging the aldl pins if you want to use it on a VN/VP)
I also hacked up a usb printer cable for my sheilded cable :P
I have attached a piccie of my super neat professional setup for reference

Sweet, thanks.
Looks like all that other stuff was a waste of time.
I can't wait to get it working.
Quick Q, will this work with EFILive?
Coz the documentation refers to max232.

I know its a big ask and might be stretchin the friendship, but if I fudge it, what would my chances be of sendin you the bits and gettin you to assemble for me?(serial end, I've got the aldl plug end ready to go)
I will send you the max232 and prototype board and socket as payment as well as self addressed jobby.

Yeah I dont mind, if you have trouble, let me know and ill PM you with my addy.
I dont mind about payment, as long as the postage is covered, im happy to help
only catch is that I dont have any access to a VR or VS anymore so I can only test it on my VN, which will onyl prove the receive side works, not the transmit side, but if I do a good job there is no reason it shouldnt work.

G'day again,
Just a quick question.
Its been a while since I played with lectronics like this.
The ground point in the aldl 2 transistor circuit between the diode and emitter of t1, where if anywhere does that get grounded to.
I apologise for my stupidity.
