Default Horn Problem

Stick with me as I'm an idiot when it comes to picking up the tools!
Have a 99 VS "S" ute and for some reason my horn only wants work every now and again?, I have tried to have a look about, (cant even find the horn itself!) but if I press the horn button I can hear a click in the large cubed fuse under the hood?, I have tried swapping this cube type fuse with one of the others but it makes no differance?, Is this a common problem?, does anyone know what it might be?, or am I better to go and buy a set of air horns instead?, cheer's Ian

I had a horn problem yesty (insert viagra joke here) turned out to be the copper ring at the base of my boss kit had fallen off and had ground away the copper pin that runs against the boss kits horn plate. Pain in the arse gotta source another now. Or buy a horn button and mount on the dash.

The 'cube' is a relay. If you can hear the relay clicking when you press the horn button, your most likely fault is the horn itself. In just about any car you can access the horn by laying under the front of the car, right up the front just behind the front bumper or similar position. Have a look as you may just have a loose connection on the horn. If you have a multimeter measure the voltage at the connections on the horn while a mate pushes the button (wear ear muffs just incase it does start working). If there is power when the button is pressed but not sound then it is the horn.

checked the fuse for the horn also. as koppers69 mentioned, the clicking sound at the relay indicates that everything to that point is working. as said. either a horn fault or loose wiring maybe.

Perhaps the relay itself is faulty. The switching side - connected to the switch on the horn pad inside the car - is probably working if you can hear it click. That doesn't necessarily mean that the switched side - connected to the horn - is. Try swapping it with another of the 'large cubed fuses' (relays) and see if the horn then works.

Relays for circuits other than the horn can fail and the roadside fix is to swap with the non-essential (to get the car mobile) horn relay. It's possible that has been done and the horn relay not been replaced.

One fix for the disappearing horn contact pin (needwork2-4fillhabbit) is to fill one end of a small length of brass tube - like a section from an old car aerial - with a blob of solder, file it flat and slip the little cap that forms over what is left of the horn contact pin to extend its length.

Turns out the saas steering wheel with the boss adapter had been put on a little wonky, took it off seen the pin was stuck not fully worn down as previously thought. Just pushed the pin from behind and it came free. Good to have a fully functioning horn again, specially since i have a roady today and it was picked up friday. To bad i bought a 2nd hand part to fix the problem before seeing the easy fix lol.
