Default Interior light stays on

I have just installed the led lighting in the roof of my VS, and now the lights won't turn off.
I got power from the standard dome light wires, and ran it through a dimmer switch before going to the lights. Everything works, but it is always on when the battery is connected.
Any possible faults?
Here is what I have done.....

its been a while since i have worked on a vs but from what i remember the +ve is supplied all the time and the earth is switched. so maybe you have supplied a earth when you bolted/screwed it into place

Would the LED's work if I had the + and - mixed up?
I'm not really keen to pull the roof lining out again if I don't have to

Pretty sure LEDs are polarised, so if you were to mix them around the wrong way they will not work.

Thats what I thought. Could it be because I am using the same earth for the dvd player or something like that?

if you have earthed the dvd player somewhere other than using the lights earth wire and then connected the leds to it then that will cause the prob

Well the lights are connected to the + and - of the original lights. They turn on as soon as the battery is connected.
DVD player is connected to the + and acc from the CD player, and the - from the lights. that only works when the key is turned to acc (as expected).
I might try bypassing the dimmer and seeing what happens
