gday
i have a 99vt 3.8 with aftermarket cold air intake, and exhaust system.
i have just purchased the stage 2 cam kit from crow cams with memcal computer, Q1. will it make a difference to fit computer chip now or damage my car doing so??? Q2 with stage 2 cam do i need to port and polish my heads if so how much do they need ported???
upon fitting cam when the time comes im going to replace lifters and rods is there anything else i should replace if so what do you reccomend???
any advice will be greatly appreciated thanks
Don't fit the memcal until the cam goes in.
There is no need to port and polish.
If your in there, see if you can replace the cam bearings. Also new valve springs, retainers, valve seals, and collets, won't hurt, they aren't that expensive, but VTs are really building up the kilmetres these days.

thanks ill deffinetly wait till cam goes in i just spoke to head recon crew this morning an they are puting in bigger springs for me as for the rest a mate also recomeded the same so ill order from cmp
as for ks i got a bargain only done 135,000 almost bout 150 short so i should be safe to slowly work
when u say no need to port and polish is there a reason why not?? im curiouse because if there is no need then i won't, im not tipped up on performance work as i just started picking up the tools not long ago, im only doing it as its been suggested a few times.
thanks
Port and polish will help obviously but just a cam will be good as well. Port and polish is really only done if your chasing every single killowatt as it's a lot of work for a little gain.
ok thanks i thought it would be better to do as ive been told heads have to come off to fit cam in an figured may aswell get them done my mate is going to port an polish with new bigger springs, valves, and collets/sleaves for 600 flat i think its worth it for that price, but if not needed then ill pass on that id rather do work that going to do a decent gain then just a couple killawatts. ive been told that with all this work i should get at least 210kw as finished product
No the heads do not have to come off to change a cam, just have to take the rocker covers off and remove the rockers and pushrods, and take the inlet manifold off and remove the lifters.
$600 for all that??? If thats legit, your mate is a champ.
210kw is a bit optimistic. Try aiming for about 135-140rwkw, maybe more depending on the cam, we still don't know the specs.

When you say upon fitting cam when the time comes im going to replace lifters and rods is there anything else i should replace if so what do you reccomend??? are you meaning your not gonna put new lifters in when ya do the cam ? I have always been told as a rule of thumb replace both as a set not sure if this is the case with roller lifters but but I would be doin it and as ya dont really have to remove the heads and spend the 600 on the heads I would be doin the lifters atleast.
CLUTCHY :
im definetly replacing lifters and rods at the same time as fitting cam, i meant to say when the time comes, (in 6-8 weeks) ill be fitting cam, heads, new lifters, rods, extractors (free), bigger throttle body (71-79mm) timimg chain- (to double row) and possibly yella terra roller rockers depending on funds, just not sure if anything else needs to be done as im not quite clued up yet this is just a basic start for experience and understanding these mods.
i was told 210kw, and i now stand corrected i met met a bloke through work who has done these mods to a vs, only difference is i have stage 2 shift kit in box, with quickshifter, an 4:11 diff gears, and an his vs dyno read was 165kw, so im NOW hoping for a similar reading, if close it will b money well spent not wasted, all up mods are costing alittle under $2000 with out roller rockers.
;
Mate 165rwkw is a pretty big read for a VS V6 with just a cam. That is either a big cam or a happy dyno.
When you were told 210kw, they would be talking about flywheel kilowatts. 210kw is not really all that far out of the ball-park, just a little bit out. Maybe 190-200fwkw.

71-79 mm tb?? Can't see that unless u put a ls1 tb on. Throttle response would blow.
165 is high, VERY high for a stock bottom ended v6 but if it's a generous dyno you may come close.
Il be keen to see your results.

Not really, many Ecotecs with Raptor superchargers pushing 200rwkw with factory bottom ends.
From what I have seen, the L36 and L67 bottom ends are actually damn strong for what they are. Its usually the bearings that let go first, due to a few oiling issues with the engines.

Mace have ecotec adaptors to fit LS throttle bodies now.

I meant without bumping compression in the bottom end by changing pistons etc.
No doubt the engine should be fine I just mean its a high power estimate for a stock bottom end. Not impossible just high.
And wraith yea I'm pretty sure pro flow do them too, don't see why you'd bother on just a cammed ecotec, they'd do more harm than good I would say.
On a boosted setup they'd be good but on a mild na?
