pod vs panel
Hey Guys,
I have a pod filter with a 4 inch intake on my car and i get a bit annoyed with the loud sucking noise that you can hear over the sound of the engine. I was just wondering if there is any dyno proven differences using pod over panel filters? So i can get rid of that damn noise!
Cheers

Panel in standard air box will always be quieter than the pod, simply because you don't have just an open tunnel thats sucking air in, not to mention of course, pods unless boxed / enclosed properly just suck in hot underbonnet air :S

im not trying to start the whole pod v panel thingy, i just want to know if there is any proven gains using the pod over the panel. If there isnt ill swith over so can hear the engine and not the annoying loud sucking noise.

In a magazine i was reading they did some tests and the pod made no difference in performance.

Yep, I've also read that most after-market panel filters (eg k&N) whilst being able to be washed again and reused, let finer dirt through, than a standard filter. And generally r a placebo thing.
But to each their own. . . .

I only run a K&N filter without oil at the drags but normally I use a paper filter and yeah there's no difference between them (but just in case it's worth .0001 I use it at the strip)

I've actually seent he opposite, pod's and standard filters being worse than oil filters. If it were the case otherwise, why wouldn't you run dry filter's over oiled filters in MX'rs?
Answer to the original question, in my car and a few other's, a little power was actually lost using a pod.

I only know from what I've read and from my experience with my old VS.
I mainly bought it (K&N) for the re-useable thing.
I felt no power diff. . . .

go pods! the noise is the best part! hehe, along with the extra throttle response and the fact that it looks so much better than a box (with a panel inside) so u can show ur friends..
a well heat shielded pod should do the same thing as a panel (ill have to get around to building a good heat sheild, or even buying one-think i saw some in autobarn)

I've actually tested them, You don't go any faster with a K&N panel and you go slower with an unboxed POD and it sounds stupid. Paper filters better than oiled cloth (K&N) but not as good as oiled foam. So if you are just changing filters to make your engine last longer, you want an oiled foam filter. CAI on the other hand is well worth doing but it doesn't matter what panel filter you run in it.
Lets say your engine breaths 350cfm flat stick and a paper filter flows 350, fine then that's all you need. A K&N panel filter might flow 500cfm and a good pod 800cfm but your engine is still breathing 350 and with the pod the air is hot and less dense, so your really only breathing less than 350 (cooler air)cfm and you go slower

a guy at work had a pod filter on his v6 3.8L vt. and his car was overheating because of the pod and the air induction hose, so he changed it back to the panel in the box. no overheating or shorting out now
cheers, Todd
