Hi
I was just wounderin if any one has a Statesman or Calais or similar with the 3 screen digital read out that has it on gas. Dose the litres per 100km still work or does it stuff up cause off the gas as Im thinking about coverting my VS Statesman to gas. Also some feed back on pro's and con's about gas/coversions would be great to thanks.
I am also doing some research to convert my VE Calais 2007 to gas. The only advice I have got so far is getting an EMER vapour injection system which is apparently a better system than IMPCO/BRC for these types of engines! I'll appreciate to have some professional advice or people's experience for the same. Cheers.
My dad converted his VR Statesman to gas. With the 3 digital displays, distance to empty goes up while running on gas because the computer doesn't realise that its not running on petrol, litres per 100kms goes down for the same reason. So while running on gas those displays are very inaccurate, until you switch it back to petrol then it reads it properly.
My VS Berlina, (still has the 3 digital displays), uses 7.8 to 8.5 litres to 100kms on petrol but on gas, it goes down to 6.0 litres to 100kms. Also, if I have a full tank of fuel, it comes up 800kms to empty, and if I run it on gas with the full tank of petrol, I have seen it go up to 1200+kms to empty.
So because the computer can't calculate the gas it confuses the digital displays. I'm not sure about the direct injection systems but I definately know that this is the case with the common lpg setups.
I should also add that when running on LPG, the engine will backfire at times without warning. When this happens the airbox will be broken, but if your lucky, just the clips will come off and you wont need to buy a new air box.
It's happened to me on a few occasions and it's done it when I least expect it, sometimes its so loud it scares the **** out of you!!
I have been through a few air boxes unfortunately.

To fix the air box blowing up problem on my friends EA falcon we cut a square out of the top of the air box (about 90mmx90mm) and put a small rubber sheet over the hole and a strap around it to hold it in place - this way when the LPG backfires it just releases through the hole and reseals afterwards.
Yeah I ended up doing that to the front of my air box. It's not a bad idea but you still have to check it everytime it backfires.
One thing I have done to fix the problem as well, is when it backfires, I change all the spark plugs, then it doesn't do it again for 30-40,000kms. At the moment it have bosch platinum plugs in it and hasn't backfired so far.
I have a VS Berlina with the 3 screen display. Its on Factory Dual Fuel.
The gauges read accurately, regardless of which fuel its running. I find it uses about 2L/100KM more running on gas, both city and h/way. Its never once backfired.
The only annoying thing about it is that in order to switch from one fuel to the other, it requires you to come to a complete stop. Don't have to shut down or put in park or anything, just pull over, press the button and drive off again.
This is Factory fitted though, aftermarket installations all behave differently. Perhaps if you find the right gas guy, he may know why and be able to make it all happen the way you want.
Mine is aftermarket, I had it installed in 2007. The place I took it too did the worst job with the install. The first week I had it, it backfired and blew up the gas mixer on the air intake, and I found out it was because they left a bolt loose that holds it together. Also my air intake pipe keeps coming off at the throttle body and it doesn't matter what I do, it will just fall off over time. That problem has also caused a problem where the car wouldn't change out of 1st gear, so I was only going about 30km/h to get home, then found the air intake was off again.
I'll be removing my gas system soon though once I change my engine over, it makes it harder to work in the engine bay with all the extra hoses, especially on the driver side of the engine trying to get the spark plugs with the extra heater hoses in the way.
