gday everyone im new to this i just bought a old 1978 hz and when i bought it on monday everything was sweet would fire up first go and when i picked her up tonight we got all the way back driving for about hour or so and we were 10 minutes from my place and we pulled over to get something to eat and then she wouldnt fire up agian but will turn over i dont know alot about the old 202 red motors but any advice will be much apperciated as all i wanna do is drive her
hello and welcome.
gonna need more info to help with this problem though. your carby got fuel in it? that would be the first place to look, whip off the air cleaner and tip a little bit of petrol down it, then try and start it agan. if it fires then dies you probably have a fueling issue. basic checks, check fuel pressure, fuel filter condition, fuel hose condition if all thats ok you need to look closer at the carby.
if it doesnt fire, check whether it has spark by taking a spark plug lead off and holding near something thats earthed, ie the rocker cover. be careful cos' sometimes you can get zapped and it friggin hurts, so hold it with a bunched up rag or something.
if no spark, check that the coil has 12V when you turn the ignition on, check the rotor button and cap condition in the dizzy.
after all that get back to us with results![]()
as ari666 says, basically if you have spark and fuel these old girls just aout have to go.
about the only other thing i can think of is if the timing is way out, but unlikely if you turned it off and it didnt just stop.
check for spark, check for fuel,(pull air filter off and activate throttle, should pump fuel into carby), check timing (put crank on TDC and check distributor pointing to No 1 pot)
if no fuel, blockage or needle stuck in carby (give it a whack?)
if no spark, points or coil
a lot easier to get going than computer controlled Fu@#$rs!
good luck
Hoots
thanks for your input guys ill check everything tomorrow when i get up and let you know the carb shes a bit ****ed and tends to spit some out at me from time to time could that be a prob? when i try to start her up she just slowly turns but wont fire up i got her goin today after takin the spark plugs out and cleanin em with some wet and dry cause they were black as went for a spin round the block and got back and washed her went to start up agian and nothin just slowly turned over im not the most mechanicly minded person but know few things here and there so if you could tell me what to look for in the dizzys and blocks would be much apperciated im not to sure but could it be electrical? the bloke said he put a new starter motor in but could that be the problem? and where can i check the 12v coils and the rotor button and cap condition and for the timing how do i check that and the bloke said itd be sitting there for 6 months before i bought it any chance of a blockage in the fuel line from crap in the tank?
cant thank you enough for ya help so far and ideas at this point i really apperciate

sounds like your lead to the starter is a bit naffed then. maybe the bolt from battery positive is a bit loose? also check the earth strap to the engine block.
if your carb is spitting (?) at you, i can only guess (without seein the 'spit') that the timing is out and its firing back through the carb. check your spark plug firing order, then check your timing. but to check it you will need a timing light. but it could also be a vacuum leak. so check all your hoses in your engine bay, so manifold, carb, brake booster etc and make sure they are blocked off. if you see a hose not joined to anything, stick a screw in the end of itsee if it helps the problem.
p.s black spark plugs generally mean shes too rich. might pay to drop it at a mechanic for a tune up.
hey mate i got a easy way of solving this problem for starters its turning over with the starter if it is the electrics will be fine, if not check the fat cables, next its probably the dizzy just take the cap off and check that ist not turning around by itself if it is ya will need a new dizzy if its not that check the coil or a simple way just run a wire to the positive on the coil to the positive in the battery then crank it over, its sorta like hot wiring it, i did it on mine a few months ago and all the wiring fried itself
another thing to check if the carby is spitting fuel at ya its probably a bit out in timing and just undo the bolt under the dizzy and turn it clockwise slowly till it turns over, i dont this too many times b4
cheers guys i went and bought a new carb from a old torana cause when the old one spat i could see it comin out on to the engine bay we tryed jumping it yesterday and she wanted to go but just wouldnt we almost had it
firing order was fine
today i tryed starting her up and she wont tick over at all now and the lights on the dash are really dull any chance of the battery is dead cause the bloke said it had been sittin there for 6 months or so gonna see if that helps if not i think im gonna chuck her in for a service
ill keep you guys posted cant thank you enough for your help
went and got a new battery and fired up first go needs a bit of tuning to get goin sweetly but other than that she purs like a kitten my next question is there seems to be some smoke comin just under the exaust manifold could this just be a blown gasket cause on the way back from mandurah she did a massive backfire
cheers for all of your input guys been a real help
backfire wont really blow the gasket, but yeah its common for them to die. i'd just glue it back up with RTV hight temp silicon and be done with it.
edit* change that, get some extractors![]()
