i was thinking there has to be something wrong here if not ill be buying this
it's just that i have writen up a list of parts for a turbo system im at 6000 with out any engine mods just turbo and fuel system havent even got to the oil system yet
You generally get what you pay for mate.
That said, if you bought it and half of it was crap. You still win.
that is sort of what i was thinking
I guess it really depends on how much you're willing to spend etc - but generally you'll find there's a few rules that ring true (from my experiences anyway)
1) the poor man pays twice
- i.e. if your wastegate diaphragm burns up or cracks due to cheap manufacturing/materials etc, you'll be buying a new (and probably better quality wastegate)... paying again.
2) you get what you pay for..
- a turbo costs a bit of money to manufacture due to particular materials being used, and processes of manufacture to ensure that housings don't crack, use of lightweight materials on the wheels etc to reduce rotational mass so they spool decently etc. etc etc. - Granted, when you buy a "brand name" turbo there is clearly more of a markup due to the brand name - but you do get a higher quality product that will perform better. - where's all the 10 second cars with $500 generic ebay turbos?
I've bought a few "cheapo ebay" components in the past for various projects that I've wanted to do on the cheap. Generally I've found that they perform as expected considering the price. - generally things don't fit together too well, threads are rough, materials are cheap/borderline unsuitable for their intended purpose.... hoses/lines fall apart quickly... etc etc
Having said all that - there's not much that can go wrong with intercooler pipe... or various other simple items.
Also, if you were to buy all that stuff separate, you'd obviously pay more - but you don't need/want half that stuff anyway
Your estimate of 6k sounds about right for a decent turbo setup on a v6... depending on how much you can do yourself. I'd work it out like this:
- manifolds & dump pipe welding + connection - $1k
- 2nd hand xr6 turbo turbo... (good for 300+kw) .. internally gated etc - $1k
- good quality simple boost controller - $50
- oil and water lines, fittings, welding of sump - $150
- intercooler, piping, clamps joins etc - $700
- bosch 044 fuel pump, surge tank, lines etc - $350
- re-drilled ls1 injectors - $200
- 2 bar map sensor - $150
- tune - $1000
Total of around $4600 for a good package. (add another 1500 on top of that for all the "little things") - that has potential to crack the 300rwkw mark... if you're willing to push it![]()
