    Default Calling All Mechanics!

Guys i know this is totally the wrong place but...
My brother wants a 1985 BMW 3 series. But I want to put a newer engine in it with less kms.
    I have a few questions
    1. Whats the best way of doing this?
    2. How much will it cost to get a professional to do it?
    3. Can a novice do it?
    4. Will i need to replace the transmission?
    5. Will the car require another roadworthy or engineering certificate if i do this?
and last is it worth it?
    Cheers Jonesy

If it's the same type of engine, it's just a matter of doing a change of engine form.

I'd leave the original engine in there if there's nothing wrong with it.

well all the cars i can find on car sales have km's higher than 220,000 i was hoping to get an engine that had close to 100,000, to give the car more reliability and a longer life

engines are not the only things to worry about when kms start hitting high figures...

seems like an epic waste of time to me, but hey.

    1. best way of doing it is not at all
    2. more than the car is worth
    3. heck no
    4. well if your replacing the engine, why not hey?
    5. you just need to inform vic roads of the new engine number. no rwc required.
    6. no.

first rule of playing with cars: "if it aint broke, then dont fix it"

If you want one with a newer lower km engine, buy the whole car.

Any engine from any car (up to a point of course) after 1985 should be allowable. I would look at (god I hat to say it) rb series from nissans or 1jz out of lexus(toyotas) these should all fit in the space, come from cars that are later models than the bimmer and therefore depending on power to weight most would fit no worries.

Go for gold - LS1 motor, supercharger, 6 speed manual engineers certificate and life insurance lol

    2. How much will it cost to get a professional to do it?

Like ari said, you will be spending far more than you will ever get back if you don't do it yourself.
