This could have been posted in vl section. But figured it wasn't related to a vl specifically
Well ive got a pretty fkn wierd problem. Ages ago i noticed smoke kinda wafting up from my gearboot/stick. it was only visible when i stopped at a traffic light and it scared the shit outta me. Didnt happen again so i didnt think much of it. But now its more and more constant. Even if i go for a 2min drive it will appear. Its a really white thin kinda smoke. Even when i was going 110 down the highway it got still wafted out but started getting a bit worse and now its getting worse in general. When i say worse i mean regualy and a little more smoke. I have absoloutly nfi and have asked a few people and googled it. It isn't the handbrake light shorting, and there are no other wires around it. No oil is leaking on to the exhaust either ( and if it was how could it come through the gear boot while going 110, wouldnt it blow under the car). So yeah im absoloutly stumped. The gearbox has only been in about 8 months, so obviuosly fluid is that old too. it is a mx5 5 speed
Any ideas greatly appreciated

hole in exhaust at the top near the shifter? or maybe a positive wire touching earth under the console, just a couple of things i can think of.
probably oil leaking from the engine/gearbox and blowing onto the exhaust.
hot air/smoke rises, so it probably found it's way through a gap in the shifter boot
have a look under the car, and look for oil/leaks stains on the exhaust
power steering fluid on the exhaust smokes alot too.
It's not constant, there are no leaks that i can see. There are no wires that are running under the centre console so it cant be that. I know hot air rises bit even if it was something burning on the exhuast wouldnt it just blow away under the car? Like while im going 110 kays there shouldnt be any smoke wafting up from outside. If it was my guess it would be more pouring in, it just like slowly rises up its realy strange
its casper ? lol nah that ones got me buggered mate i'll have to sit and think about that one
Can you pull the shifter boot/console, start it and see if you can see where it's coming from?
Yeah, i would take the boot off to see where its coming from. Top of where the shifted goes into the box or front the side somewhere.
Also, what does it smell like? Next time it happens, sniff the smoke... lol
Might give you an idea if its electrical smoke, oil smoke or maybe steam?
Take out the centre console and remove the transmission tunnel seal top and bottom. It's either not fitted correctly or has a hole in it. I wouldnt be driving with that shit inside the cabin with me. Even worse than if you smoked durries. You will have a leak somewhere most likely the gearbox or exhaust you wont get much air flow up around the top there.
Get a another boot and seal and fix the leak. Could even be a top gearbox seal and the box is getting really hot and its burning off.
Time to do some investigating mate. You'll figure it.
Ive tried sniffing the smoke, doesnt have a destinct smell to it. But you can smell gearbox oil in the car. I'm currently driving around without the manual surround piece on and its just comming from around that gearbox plate. The rubber boot thing that goes at the bottom of the shifter is all broken and there it is a bit damp, but its been like that ever since i got it. And its dry underneath on that plate.

Well mate, you just said theres a hole in it and a strong gearbox smell to the car wtf?
Typing on here aint gonna fix it go check it out.
What do you mean "wtf" I'll rephrase that for you. You can smell gearbox oil. I still don't understand what im checking out. Yer there is a tear in the little rubber boot, but there are no leaks or anything. It has me and a few others scratching our heads. I don't want to pull the gearbox out just to "check it out" Ill rip the bottom boot out tommorow and have another look. But the boot has been torn under there ever since i got the car, i don't see how it will all of a sudden cause trouble
I mean by that if you can smell it, its not because you have a super spidey sense of smell and can smell it from the inside of the box, it has to be leaking doesn't it?
Check it out mate, even get under there and check with a mirror and light over the top of the box if you still cant see anthing from the top of the tunnel inside the car.
Might only be noticing it now after its been leaking out slowly for a while and getting hot who knows.
Is it still Smoking when the cars off key outta the car or even d/c the battrey itll take the opinion of a burning wire away
as u said its been like that since u got it but now its time to be replaced cars for ya
nahh only while the car is running, doesnt do it while on acc. Even if its been sitting for a couple of hours and i drive for 2 minutes it might do it. Other times ill drive for 45 minutes and it wont. Ill jack it up hopefully on saturday and take a proper look and also check to see how much fluid is in there
It could be an exhaust leak then mate if its doing it while its cold, coming up through the boot.
It could be, does it while its hot and cold though
hey mate i just had a thought, keep an eye on the transmission oil in the gearbox, the front seal of the box may be leaking into the clutch and the clutch is cooking the oil. just a thought but no one else has any better ideas
don't forget if you jack it up make safe with stands u have only one life
Just another spanner in the cog, how about checking the rear tappet cover seals v6 & v8 and valley gasket on the v8s i know the oil runs down at the back of the block onto exhaust when the seal perishes,
some times you can't see it leaking.
just a thought.
Well the rb30's are a straight six but yeah no visible leaks at all from under and in the car anywhere
is it still smoking? and have you managed to check the oil level ? you won't be able to tell if the frount seal on the gearbox is leaking when its in there, they only way to check is to take the box out. or if there is a cover you can take off ( im not sure if they have one, just going by what i see at work on trucks )
