Long time viewer, first time registerer (lol)
thought it was about time i made an account and had my deepest questions answered.
first of all.
im 18 and have never been into cars. but i now own my cousins VS commodore wagon.
and i love it. i search stuff constantly, always try and learn wat stuff is.
ive set up all my stereo and sound system.
but i still cant seem to know where to learn what IS the car.
my cousin was a bit of a hoon, and he's done a few things to my car, like pacemakers and 4.2L, but i wanna know what it all is.
i wanna be able to look at an engine and know everything about it.
so if you can help me,
where do i start to learn everything about my car? lol
help will be appreciated.
Peace.

You could ask your cousin for a list of things he has done and we will explain what each one means so you can understand what it actually does and how it works. Or you could go to your local mechanic and get him to have a look over it and tell you what he thinks. The more time you spend on this site, the more you will understand about your car. Welcome to the forums mate.![]()
Thanx dude, i look at alot of forums to do with my car so im slowly learning
just another quick question, how do i know if i have replies to things? like nothing told me i got your replie, i just searched the post and found it myself :S
ive also posted on some other threads and i wanna know if i get replies.
thanx!

Read up on how an engine works...really understand the concept of it. Start there.
Has he bored his block??? :O
U have to suscribe to the thread when u posted it
suck, squeeze, bang, blow.....the basic concept of a four cylinder engine, wikipedia is a good start mate, just type in Internal combustion engine and all will be explained
Black, Red leather, 20" Pentagons, Red walls, Lowered, OTR, Mafless, 3.9s, Diff dumpers, 341rwhp...
185i, Chasers, Flappers, Venetians, Sunvisor, Twin diff dumpers, 194rwhp...

thanx for the help guys!
i asked him about the 4.2 and he said he raised them up from 3.8 or something

So because you have a VS wagon, that means you have the V6 Ecotec which is a 231ci or 3.8Litre motor. What 4.2L means is that the motor has been stroked, which means the block has been bored and cleared for a larger crank which raises the engine capacity to 4.2 Litres. This is what we call a 'Stroker'
so it uses more fuel?
and he's changed the engine from what i know. no idea what type.
and from the suck, squeeze, bang, blow, im guessing 4.2 will give more kick?
and from that guy above, and it has a name, people dont like 'strokers'? lol

Post a picture of the car/motor mate.
Strokers purpose is to give more torque. More cubes (more cubic inches, i.e. increasing the displacement i.e. 3.8 to 4.2 is increasing displacement/increasing cubic inches etc...) equals more power.
So put that in context, an engines displacement is calculated by bore vs stroke.
Bore: The diameter of a cylinder
Stroke: The length or distance of the piston movement/travel (the up and down 'stroke' of the piston inside the cylinder)
The stroke length is determined by:
1. Length of the Piston rod
2. Primarily the size of the cranks on the crankshaft
So to answer your question, yes upgrading from 3.8 to 4.2 will give it more kick, it has a greater displacement, thus allowing a greater volume of fuel/air inside the combustion chamber = more output.
Further Reading: HowStuffWorks "What does 2.4 liter mean in the context of an engine?"
i find "suck, squeeze, bang, blow" to be a pretty poor description. your basic four strokes are:
induction: air fuel mixture enters the cylinder past the inlet valve, despite common misconception it isnt "sucked" it is actually forced in by atmospheric pressure
compression: air fuel mixture is compressed by the upward motion of the piston
power: the spark plug fires just before top dead centre igniting the mixture creating a controlled burn through the combustion chamber forcing the piston down
exhaust: the gasses created by combustion escape past the exhaust port just in time for everything to start again.
hopefully that was helpful and understandable, theres obviously a lot more to it then that but thats basic combustion.

thanx guys!
understand heaps more from all your help!
your all great!
