I was watching gasoline on channel 31 today (unsure how old the program is), it was about Difilippo exhausts and they showed how Darren makes the systems for the current models.
A few things he did say caught my attention:
"Tri-y headers have NO scavenging effect on a fuel injected engine" and "The HSV style header will outflow any Tri-y's"
I thought this was a bit wierd, but as we know difilippo doesn't sell tri-y's, so maybe its a marketing plot. Has anyone else heard of this?
I know I'm gonna open a can of worms here especialy if one_and_only2004 reads this ...LOL
By the way 4-1's FTW
From distant memory ( w hen I worked as an exhaust fitter some 15 years ago ) properly designed 4 into 1 will give greater scavenging effects than tri y, try y better scavenging effects than standard log style manifold. The general consensus back then was tri y for low down torque and 4 into 1 for more power up top. If anyone know any different then I am open to learning something new.
I read in a magazine a article he wrote about exhausts. He made a point of claiming tri y’s were pretty well useless and the only reason other companies made them was because they were easier to manufacture. He dismissed claims that gains had been shown on dynos where they were fitted by saying they must have been doing something else wrong. To swallow his claims I guess one must accept that the rest of the world is wrong. He also claimed that many other companies got the merge pipe thing wrong.
Everyone I have spoken to has maintained that tri y’s deliver the goods low down and for normal driving and 4 into ones work best tuned to length for maximum revs/racing.
A few exhaust shops my brother and I have spoken to don't rate difilippo very highly at all.
Tri Y's are good enough for NASCAR so they're good enough for me. Sounds suss that he states that tri Y's are crap when he doesn't sell them and that they're easier to make when there are more welds involved in a tri Y. Header design is not as straight forward as some might think but also in 90% of the applications he would sell for there would be little if any noticeable difference between each and every aftermarket system.
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
application is the word
Well I thought the 'bird is the word'
