Alright,

Got a fuel system problem on my 1991 Toyota 4Runner, 3L V6 (3VZ) Petrol.

Keen on hearing some opinions.

Recently went on a big 4wd touring trip and tackled some seriously steep, rocky hills. I pushed it hard up a hill, bouncing around everywhere and it started missing pretty badly. Turns out I stirred up all the **** from the bottom of the fuel tank, sucked it through the lines, clogged the filter, blocked the two center injectors fully and pushed it 250 k's home running on 4cylinders (thankfully no piston damage etc).

I took it to my mechanic when I got home who has done the following:
- Compression test, all A-ok (RHB 150/120/158, LHB 145/115/150)
- flushed all lines
- replaced fuel filter
- Cleaned/replaced seals/flow tested injectors
- Drained tank twice
Got it back and was running fine, not 100% as it was before, but back on 6 cylinders and on the whole quite smooth.

I've just run half a tank of 98 in it, and unfortunately in my haste, I ran the tank a bit too low and it just started slightly missing again.

So, I'm assuming there's still some **** in there. I'm planning on doing the following:

- Replace fuel filter
- Run some Injector cleaner through the tank OR; Nulon Petrol Injector Cleaner - 300mL - Supercheap Auto Australia
- Run this through Liqui-Moly Fuel System Cleaner/Conditioner - Supercheap Auto Australia

If that doesn't work, I'm thinking drop the tank, completely clean out and replace fuel pump.

Anyone have any suggestions of what else to do or confirm what I'm planning is sufficient?

Thanks

looks like the 2 centre cylinders have taken a hit on the comp test .nothing should get past the fuel filter unless it clogs and tears open.also shouldnt matter how low you run on fuel the shits at the bottom of the tank where the pickup is or mixed completely in the fuel being continously circulated into the filter all day anyway.being injected if it sucks any air going round corners or up hill or under heavy acceleration it will missfire untill the air comes out the injectors and the rails purge all the air back to the tank.i wouldnt be surprised if the tanks damaged where the pump or pickup draws from much like commodores have surge issues when they swirlpot starts having issues

The two centre ones sure did take a hit. I,d say some of the ****/rust, debris has scored the bore.

Thanks bro, I might take you up on that offer next weekend?

EDIT:

Delco, that all makes sense, but, why would it start missfiring again if the filter or pump didn't get clogged again, and that would only really happen once you run the tank low enough to pick up all the condensed sediment at the bottom of the tank.

Interesting that two full drains of the tank didn't get it all out if that is the case.

Alright so I took the filter off and drained it yesterday. This is what came out after about 7 or 8 other flushes.

It has half a tank of 98 in it too.

So all this gunk is making it through the filter, it better not be clogging the injectors again!!!!

I'm thinking drop the tank, flush it out THOROUGHLY, and then chuck a new filter on it. Any other suggestions?

Update:

So, many thanks to Rick for coming over on Saturday to help drop the tank out. Turned out to be a prick of a job because Toyota's are bullshit.

Dropped the tank out and found the fuel pump sock had fallen off and the pump was pretty shagged and loose in it's bracket. So, put a new fuel pump in, cleaned the tank out (lots of sediment at the bottom) and put it all back in and put half a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank of 98 already in it.

Still has a miss just off idle, but thinking that's an air or vaccum leak in the intake pipe (which has a big split in it) or on one of the surround vaccum lines. That will be next weekends job.

Anyway, pics:

Changed the fuel filter again after cleaning tank and putting new fuel pump on, old filter was fairly clogged.

Gave it a good run on the side of the road, holding various revs and rev ranges, trying to flush alot of the injector cleaner/98 through the system to clear up the miss.
End result, it's still got a pretty bad miss just off idle between 1500-2500 RPM, after that it revs fine.

I've gone through all the vaccum lines and can't find a vaccum leak (which if there was it would miss through whole rev range and probably stall at idle/low revs). So I still think it has to be fuel flow.

Check the two videos for the miss.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Short of me pulling the whole thing apart again and flushing lines/injectors (AGAIN)....
- I'm going to test the coil packs, OHM output, but given this has been a fuel related issue the whole time, I'm doubtful it's ignition related.
