Hellz yea.
$4000 - mint VP Executive
$10,000 LS1 Gen III V8 purchased, and installed.
12sec quarter mile, here you come!
In hindsight, it was an obvious choice, wasn't it?

When you're throwing out the old S1 buick motor, there's absolutely no difference

If ya like comfort and dont mind your vx get another vx or vy. But if you want to go one step better and dont mind a bit of power when you need it and prefer a good family car that you know has the good bits VZ COMMODORE Around $15,000 +
VZ ACCLAIM
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) including traction control, 15x7 inch alloy wheels, Rear Park Assist (on sedan), Side Impact Airbags (SIAB), air conditioning, four power windows.
The Vz Commodore has the 3.6 litre Alloytec engines which has lots more power than the vs -vx holden commodore 147kw 3.8L ecotec v6 and better on fuel and more smoother.
The Alloytec comes with new steering and better safety than previous commodores.
The Alloytec produces 175 kW of power at 6000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm

If you start at 2002 cars in your price range you'll have more variety to choose from !!! there's not much difference between the vx and vy models anyhow after the vx2 upgrade... it's basically just body styling and interiors... the underlying car is basically the same.
You could get THIS VX and still have money left to do it up more... or you could get a VX SS for around the same money... If you stick with 2003 and up basically all you'll get is a boring N/A 6 as the Supercharged 6's and V8's will be out of your price bracket... you need a couple of extra G's to score a VY S/C6 or v8.

Depends if you want a v6 or v8.
VX SS would be nice and very easy to mod A LS1.
