Question 235/50R17 Tyres

I drive a stock standard VZ 6Cyl Calais. The tyre placard says it can take 225/50R17 or 235/45R17 tyres. I would like to fit 235/50R17 tyres. Mainly so the extra 5mm on each side will provide a little extra protection for the wheels from getting scratched by kerbs, and the extra 5mm in height will provide a that little bit of extra clearance over a couple of speed humps I drive over regularly. Anyway....... Can anyone tell me if they will be too big, and will rub, or will they be okay?

dont you mean an extra 10mm, or do u mean on either side of each rim
having a different rolling diameter will affect your speedo
