    Question Diffs: minispools and backlash

I've got a VN s1 V6 auto with some backlash in the open-centred diff.

I have a VR 5L live axle with a semi-working LSD (LS on street, open wheels on skidpan).

I have a minispool sitting in my room that should suit either diff.

Does backlash come from the gears or the diff centre? I don't know enough about it... what I was thinking is this: take my LSD rear axle from the VR and install it in the VN. Use the VN open-centre in the VR and put the minispool in that.

Will I end up with the backlash still there? VN's done 500,000km if that gives an idea of the condition of the diff.

    Any thoughts appreciated

I know, that's why I have to swap diffs if I want a minispool in the 5L.

It's the main gears so the centre wont change it, you just need to tighten the gears up a bit

Which nut is that? Also the front seal on the LSD in the VR has started to weep... it costs a ****load to get one of these things rebuilt doesn't it?

its under the flanges of the tailsharft you have to split the tailsharft from the diff to see it before i got myne rebuilt i did it up an it stoped the leak for a little while put the open wheel with the mini spool in the v8 and the lsd in the v6 well that what i would do but it dont mean im right

OK, so that nut can tighten the seal up a bit? Might have a crack at it.

That's what I'm thinking at the moment mate but the only thing holding me back is that the open wheeler has some backlash and I don't want to end up with that in the V8 as the shift kit will make mincemeat of the diff gears.

no, don't swing on that nut, if you tighten it to much the collapsable spacer that is used to set the pinion bearing preload can collapse slightly making your backlash problems worse.

your best bet is to take it to a workshop and have em replace the seal and at the same time they might as well fit some gears and your open center which you can give em with the mini spool already fitted (assuming yo ucan remove the center from the VN and fit the mini spool into that yourself)
