a resonator causes the engine noise sound waves to interact and interfere destructively hence making the sound coming out of your exhaust softer

vn_man thats a cannon muffler your reffering to, a hot dog muffler usually gets installed where your main muffler goes and it makes your car LOUD, it only muffles the sound a little bit (what its designed to do) but ive also heard of people also putting a normal muffler in the centre, then a hotdog at the end instead of a resonator to make it louder & a little lumpier versus a normal resonator which keeps your car near silent
