hey all
i'm thinking about changing the diff gears in my vs ute, i use the car every day but i would like a bit better acceleration that what my diff (3.08) gives me now
i'm hoping to do a few quarter mile runs but it not the main aim of the car
the car has a 5.0L and a auto
if any one has any idea's it would be great to hear them

Like i told you at the meet, if you want heaps of go off the line then 3.9's.... 3.7's would be nice if you can find them?
I dont know what 5L's are like but for the 6 it made a shitload of difference......![]()
I dunno, the general consensus seems to be that gears don't make that much difference on the 304. And I tend to agree. They make a good bulk of bottom end torque, and there's no real need to skip it, and go straight for the top-end power like gears do for you. I certainly wouldn't grab anything under 3.73s if you were going to bother at all.
If you plan on camming it, grab a set of 3.73 or 3.89 gears - otherwise, don't botherGreenfoam threw some 3.45s in his VP and didn't notice more than a tenth of a difference either way if I recall correctly.
Then again, having said that... the way YOU drive it? Get 4.11s and a spool up ya![]()

cam and head work is on the to do list but atm the auto needs some love and i'm thinking while i at it I'll freshen up the diff at the same time.
and i do re-call a challenge from some one about every 2 i did they would do 1, my guessing is that person owes me about half a dozen of doughnut kings finest buy now![]()

Yep that's right Morton, less than a tenth difference over the 1/8th and I honestly don't think I would have gained anymore with 3.9s as I'm landing pretty much at peak torque on the shifts now. However, change the cam and diff gears will make all the difference. In order of gains most gain to least. Tune / CAI / Cat back / gears / headers and do them in that order then at the end you are ready for a cam and another tune (don't really need the headers tho)

what would be recommended for a vs 5lt manual. mine feels heaps lazy and barely smokes my 17s...which is disappointing. atm im running the stock 3.07 vt ss gears. ive heard 3.9s is the way to go with the 5speed. but want to make sure.
3.7's would be better but they're harder to find from what ive reaf theyre more suited to the gear ratios 3.9's might be easier to find and maybe a bit cheaper

3'9's shiftkit stage 2 if you want a bucket load of wheel spin in a ute especially when its wet.... mine is easy enough to catch me out in the wet and i got a sedan with a heavy sub box in the back haha call preston auto's and diffs they are great..
my speedo is out by 20kms up to 80/90 and 4okms around 100ish
but if you want better acceleration the diff will do barely anything without some engine mods... i fell in that hole...
hope this helps
so would 3.7s be sweet or still go the 3.9s coz ive found some 3.7s but theyre a little bit more exxy but im willing to pay it if they make teh difference from the 3.9s
they did my work a year and a bit ago and its still going strong... i have no complaints
