Default Exhaust regulations for a ute - discussion

    Hey everybody,

Me mate reckons he can cut his exhaust just past the tub of his xr6 as there are different regulations for utes compared to sedans etc. any comments???

the current law that i thought applied to all cars was the exhaust had to protrude from the rear of the vehicle 5mm (i think). btw im in victoria.

That regulation is too abstract, which manufacturer? The motor vehicle or the exhaust? The outlet of the muffler is the place that the muffler manufacturer has designed to emit exhaust gas. So it can be placed anywhere....

And that is an EPA regulation, not an ADR.

He asked = Me mate reckons he can cut his exhaust just past the tub of his xr6

They say = The exhaust system
of a motor vehicle must be constructed to ensure that exhaust gases are only
emitted from a place designed by the manufacturer to emit such gases.

In other words the rear of your car not just past the tub.

which is what i figured becuase all manufacturers design their exhaust system with a tail pipe at the REAR of the car. so the statement is correct... and me mate's oblivious to the law.

I agree. Im probably going to have just one muffler... and i know thats illegal but its hardly obvious compared to not having a tail pipe! and yeah ur rite... at least my system will be quiet... straight off the cat u gotta be kidding me!

It only has to be a certain amount behind the last passenger opening (door or window)

I can't remember the measurements, but its around half a meter i think (enough to have it infront of the rear wheel)

Theres also angle requirements for the tip. Has to be at a certain angle to the road, and only allowed on one side of the car (i think its drivers side, but i can't be sure)

nope, XR's have a seperated tray in them.

My panno is going to get pipes out both sides before the wheels, even if i have to make "spares" that come out the back for rego.

My point exactly. Ford utes, and Crewmans are able to legally have side exhausts!
