Fuel poblems

i have a vn commodore 89 model and i am have problems when guage is between 1/4 and empty engine cuts out as if there is no fuel in it but i know there is still about 10 plus litres left in it. has anybody got any ideas.

in a car of that age theres bout to be some scum in the bottom of the tank plus the fuel pumps in our commonwhores aren't so great its not recommended to let them get beneath a quarter of a tank
