    Default Hiding number plates

    Hey,

Unless you're doing something illegal and want to hide yourself, why do people cover their number plates in photos? It's not like they can track you down or anything... what's the go with everyone hiding their plates?

well its more the fact that if people know what your running and happen to actually see the car, word spreads and they might come flog it or dob it in under anti hoon, word got around about a guy two houses down that has a fully blown vk v8 in his shed. i heard about it through the pipeline and talk about sumone arranging to steal it.

Plus, if you have a grudge against someone online, (and you can read about their driving habits on forums like these) it's not hard to pick a time and place they'll be, and use their number plate to dob them into the EPA for littering, or report them to the hoon line.

    1. You can enter the numberplate details onto VicRoads website and it can provide details of the car which can then lead to tracking down your personal details like address, phone number etc. Aids Theft
    2. So it's not an open invitation to cops
    3. Don't give out the cars personal details like you don't give out your D.O.B. phone number, address etc

How can you defect a non working car??? Just claim you were fixing it?

Yeah I blocked my plates purely because if I am going to be rattling off what the mods are I don't want to be giving out an open invite. Unless you are here blatantly admitting to doing stupid things and illegal mods to your car, I doubt police will track you down. Chances are your car already draws the attention of any nearby plods anyway.

I've never hidden my plates on here because I'm not worried about anyone stealing my car (it's nothing special anyway) but if I was ever to post my Hiace I'd be blacking them out only because I've got all my tools in there and replacement value is about 10K.

not sure on the details but it was an engine conversion, the car was still registered as whatever the engine was originally

In SA (so i assume Aus wide) they can defect the car without the owner present. The defect label is put on the outside of the window, and a note left for you to report to a police station for it to be placed on the inside.

Complain to the people that make legislation then.

It wouldn't be so bad if they defected dangerous cars, but hey, targeting modified cars is a gold mine, if i was in that position i'd do the exact same thing, quickest way to line my pockets for retirement.

Just becuase its 100% legal doesnt make it 100% non-defectable, did you know that a car straight of the production line at GMH can be defected on a minimum of 5 points!. Thats if they wanted to Really throw the book at you.

He's saying that all cars have different things that are defectable.

For instance, ALL VT Commodores off the production line, the indicators only flash 59 times a minute, instead of 60 times.
