    Default Need advice urgent

This may be a long post, but here goes, i purchased an intake manifold gasket kit, and rang a mobile mechanic to come and fit it, he said $100. When he took the manifold off, there was coolant all though out it, and the gaskets were completely stuffed. So no time or money wasted there. He pointed out some brown sludge, coming out of one of the heads, and said the gasket on that will need doing. So i said, just do both at the same time. The quote he has given me, is

    $100 water pump
$150 for the full head and manifold gasket kit
$60 Oil ( he reccomnded 10-40, i told him to get Full Synthetic)
$15 new drive belt (has quote- baby cracks in it..)
    $20 for new water hoses

So all up $345 in parts, he said he will do it for $300 labour. Total $650 all done. I have coolant here, and will provide a new oil filter..
I'm being told this is way too cheap, and i think it may be the case. I'm concerned about what will happen with my heads, i was told he would drop them off, and they would be decked, and shaved 5thou?? But i'm being advised that more should be done to them than that. PLease, any advice would be great, as were about to give this guy the money tommorow, and we dont want to spend this much money, and it be a waste, or there be something dodgy going on, like with the heads?

BTW this is a mobile mechanic, conducting the work n my garage..

One thing you should consider is there work is guaranteed for any issue's should arise?

So why isn't the individual/s that are advising you complete the task's in hand.. At least it'll cost more money for the same job.
    Cheers,

    Dave

Sounds like a fair price. It's not a hard job for a qualified mechanic and sounds like he is just charging you for labour at an hourly rate. Most shops due to overheads will charge labour plus parts markup and then some.

$650 is on the money and it's hard to make a nistake on a head gasket job. I say go with the bloke because he's not trying to rip you.
