Default Help with aftermarket water temp gauge

Ok, so i have my new gauge installed, positive to positive, negative to negative, i have tested to make sure its geting power and it is and the backlight is all working. Then i have the signal wire hooked onto a temp sender sitting in the radiator pipe, as seen in the pic below with the adapter.

SO... turned the car on, got to normal operating temp and it still sitting on 0 and hasn't moved, now, is there a way to test the gauge and or sender unit? is it is just going to be the sender unit

the fact its a 1 wire sender and isnt screwed into an earth IE the block it wont read anything you need to put a metal ring crimp under the sensor when you screw it an and run it to earth

how would i run a cable from the other end of it, which is inside the radiator hose, to an earthing point... On the instructions there is no where it says the sender has to be screwed into metal.

im assuming its an electric guage not the capillary type .heres my crude paint job youll see the ring crimp going to an earth screw the sensor through the ring and run the wire to earth.

yip that will work fine go onto the bolt behind the battery in that pic will be a good earth or you could go direct to the battery negative

This may be a stupid question, but is the temp on the standard temp gauge the temp for the water?
