Hey guy's, i'm after a new oil filter to go with my next oil change. Are the K&N oil filters any good? I have a Cooper filter at the moment, which i was told was good, but i have my doubts, as i've seen them at basically give away prices...Otherwise, any reccomendations for a decent oil filter?
K&N = average filter with a way above average price.
Just go to Repco and grab a Ryco oil filter. Tried and true, nothing over the top, they are about $15 and they work well. I have always used Ryco, never had a single problem with them. Just half fill the new filter with fresh oil just before you screw it on, just have your drip tray under it when you screw it on, it can be a little messy.

Cooper are fantastic. You wouldn't believe it, but Cooper actually started offering lifetime warranties before Ryco did. We sell both at Bursons, and we all take the Cooper stuff home. It's cheaper, we make a better GP on it, and it's the same quality as Ryco. Even some of the big manufacturers and franchises in our area have started taking Cooper/Wesfil filters only.

There was a recent thread come shitfight on here recently about this very subject.
I don't wish to add to this fight but I've been using Ryco and Valvoline for years and years and they are good. By "good" I mean they've never let me down, never had an engine die and I don't see the sense in paying top dollar for just a bloody name!
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I have been changing my own oil in my VP for the past 16 years and I always have used Valvoline Oil and Ryco Oil Filter and never had a problem with either. I also don't work for either of these companies.
I use ryco or purolator, whichever one gets put in front of me at the service desk. I used K&N once because no others were in stock. Oil gets filtered either way I'm sure. My only complaint was once I went to screw on a ryco and the rubber seal wasn't seated properly straight out of the box, definitely pays to check.![]()
Check out my VP right 'ere!
Filters I mostly use are -
Donaldson or Ryco on the VL's
Purolator on the VK
Fleetguard on the V6 Rodeo.
In a bit dubious about Ryco now that they are mostly made in china.
Project Berlina TURBO!
Along with alot of Holdens parts(now)

We sell them the Cooper filters, and they love them.
We've never had any sort of issues with the Cooper/Wesfil stock doing similar things.

Cooper filters are Aussie made i assume? Might make a switch from Ryco if they are.

If you're really curious, you should get one of each and cut them all in half, find out![]()

I don't care about whether one "works" better than the other, i'm worried about whether one is Aussie made and one is foreign made.
Are the Coopers ones made in Australia or by foreigners? If the Coopers ones are made in Australia, i'll use those simply because they are Australian made. Or even AC Delco i suppose. Or are the AC Delco ones made in bloody China too now?

Mates got a bmw and used a ryco turned out that ryco didnt have drain backs in them and it would get oil pressure for like 30 seconds. Ended up buying a genuine (albeit expansive one) that works perfect

Yeah, Ryco have some issues with some of their filters. It could have been old stock - what sort of BMW is it? I would've thought they'd fix something that bad by now
Sometimes suppliers have filters sitting on shelves for YEARS. The supplier may have an updated design, but you may not buy it![]()

I obviously use the Ryco Z160 filters, never had a problem with leaks or loss of pressure or anything so far.

I'd be interested to buy a Purolator filter and take it apart next to a Ryco for comparison. Word is they're the original oil filter maker, and I'd love to see what they do for the V8. I think their part number is L14006 for the Holden 304.

They are probably ok because the produce so many of them so frequently. Same with whatever ones are used on the VN - VR Buick's and the VS - VY Ecotec's![]()

Gee i wasn't expecting this many replies so soon/at all..Also i wasn't aware there was a similar thread. I did do a search, but as some of you know, all the search function does is give you a random list of threads where the words I,You, or Commodore are mentioned !!! Anyway's thanks for all the replies guy's, and i'll probably either stick with the Cooper, or switch to a simialar.
