Hi all, I've got a 2003 Holden Commodore VYII Executive.
Last night, I was driving home on Belgrave-Gembrook Rd (a winding road), and I took quite a tight turn at about 30km/h and all of a sudden, the battery light comes up - along with the steering wheel locking up (I could barely turn and I JUST missed a tree, thankfully I steered away from the tree quite hard), as well as the brakes locking up. I could only stop the car using the handbrake, at which the word "Brake" comes up on the screen.
The whole car just then stopped and I had to restart the engine.
I was scared outta my brains! I had just missed the tree and thankfully there was no damage to the car.
What on earth could be the problem? My battery is just new, I've checked the fluids and they are ok.
Is this a safety mechanism?
Your car stalled......
Brakes & steering would of worked, Just not power assisted.
Check the battery terminals etc, But your car definately stalled/died, If you didnt hesitate you could of put it into neutral while rolling an re-started it.
Cheers

I took a simple turn at around 30km/h and the battery light came one, and yes, the brakes and steering were still operational, I just had to use a lot more force.
The battery terminals are fine and the fluids are ok. Could there be any other problem?
Is the car on gas? Possibly a dirty fuel filter? Dirty air filter maybe, doubt it though.
Hmmm
*Thinks what would make an ecotec stall*
It'd of logged a fault code more than likely, You could possibly give holden a ring, an say something a long the lines of
"Hey I have a VY executive an it's stalled a 'couple' of times, I was wondering if it'd be possible to get a diagnostic check done on it?"
No idea if theyd charge, An unfortunately I dont know too much about VY's an if you can check the error code yourself, However tomorrow during regular hours, I'm sure someone else could help out.
Cheers

Hmm alright so it probably is the gas system...as the battery seems fine and all leads are fine as well.
Also, I am sure that there was enough gas left, 2 of 4 lights were on so that shouldn't have caused the problem. This just makes me a bit weary to drive now - even more so when I'm on gas.
I'll get it checked out by a gas specialist - hopfully everything is ok!! ....Cause everything's been running flawlessly till just then.
also could be bushes in alternator my mates vy did simmiler thing and it was just the bushes
get a diagnostics check done by holden or a good mechanic other than that it is all guess work.
btw if it happens again you need to really stand on the brake pedal to make them work, they will work as hozy said they're just not power assisted.
Nobody wants to play with me
There are two ways to check fault codes. First one is best.
Using the OBD2 connector you can get the fault codes (same as VR onwards). You'll be able to find a howto in the how to section.
Second way is to get into the diagnistic mode in the cluster. I'm fairly sure it displays error codes for the whole vehicle since it goes through telling you everything about the vehicle's status.
i live in cockatoo, i know the roads pretty well and to say i was have been packing myself would be an understatement. lucky you kept it away from that tree
dads old ford ef had a problem with gas, where once it stalled on the highway under breaks as the revs dropped my guess was that the revs went too low and just died, dad restarted it on petrol and took it to the mechanic to have it tuned for a mix of gas and petrol.
worked fine after that, until my brother totalled it 4 weeks later. then my parents got some sense and bought a calais :P
has the car been tuned for gas etc? i would imagine but just asking
Battery light would be a side effect of the stall, doubt it had anything to do with the actual stall, but best to take it to holden or a gas expert to get it checked out
