Question How big is too big?

just wondering what rims do you find too large?

what rims do you currently have on what cars?

what rims would you like to have on your cars?
You're probably wondering where you are. I'll tell you where you might be. You might be in the room that you die in. This is your wake up call.

I agree, but i think there isn't such thing as "too big". Depends on the person, the car etc.

I personally used to love big rims, now i am more than happy with my factory 17" Senator wheels on my Senator. No way i'd put aftermarket wheels on it or anything OTHER than what's on there.

I don't see all the fuss about big "dinner plate" style wheels....I think 17" is big enough on most commodores. 18" max, then they start to look too big. On an older car (Torana/HQ-WB etc.) anything bigger than 15" is out of place.

"well, this is a car forum not a 4wd forum"
i dont see very much difference in that point your trying to make

it is possible to have some "large/big" rims on a commy you just need to do it all right and not just go "hmmmm look 26" ill jst chuck em on my stock VZ coz im sik"

I've got 17's on a vh, 19's on a vz and I think they both look good, the guy down the street has 20's on a VR and I think they look too big, he likes them, but the VZ might look OK with them.
Point is I agree with most here, depends on the car, the wheels, like any deep dish doesn't look as big as something that the dish goes all the what to the outer rim which is a good illusion when you have to go for something smaller not by choice and so I pick anything from a 15" to a 20" depending on application. 22" on 4WD in case this does turn into a 4WD forum because thats what my boss has got on his car and they look good as well (Navara).

Any want a set of 22" chromes, Commo stud pattern, wile we're on the topic of big wheels!

I think 20"s are too big on almost all commodores pre-VT, and I wounldn't be going too much bigger than 20" on the newer ones either. Maybe 22" max on VEs but they would have to suit the car

I think anything above 18's is to big for Commodores, EXCEPT the VE. VE's need 20 inches under the guards.

If I could afford it I would have gone 22s on my Stato but I am more then happy with 20s.

    Personally I think VB-VL 17s, maybe 18s
    VN-VS 19s max
VX-VZ 20s max depending on the model
    VE 22s max

20's are fine, maybe not on older cars. I think 22's look out of place.

I like rims between 19 and 20 inch

stato looks real good but its amazing how they dont look like 20's, i would of said 19's, this is what I was saying about different rims on different cars, these would look huge on a VB-VS, nice colour car too.

Troy711 - can I use that pic of your car to photoshop some wheels onto?

I like my 22's but I think only the VE's can pull them off (I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, but I like them, so I got them!!)

16s ftw. Cheap tyres and doesn't shake your whole interior apart. I wouldn't mind some 18" HBD J-series though. Anything larger then 18" and the costs get ridiculous, ride and handling go out the window too.

Your basing all of this info on..........?
Ride - Current VE Senator and Grange have 20's while priding themselves on a comfy ride
Handling - R35 V spec has 20's.......think they handle pretty well.
Price - Yes the price does go up, but it's hard to compare apples with apple here. Manufactures will make absolute junk 15's yet most 18"+ are marketed as being performance based tyres.

Sorry, I should have elaborated. I meant for a pre-VE commodores. When you get to 19" on a VT-VZ the sidewall profile is too small to allow optimum compliance with the road. Also you can't fit wide tyres on 20s without scrubbing. I'm guessing the sweet spot for a VT-VZ is 17-18", and for VE 18-19" due to the larger rolling diameter.

Stock is 19" and i'm sure HSV would recommend against the optional 20" wheels if you were after ride quality. Also the ride leaves much to be desired compared to true luxury cars. The market for HSVs (even the Grange) is still sports-luxury.

I'm guessing the choice for 20" wheels over something like 18" is for steering feel and street-cred. The last thing Nissan want is journalists commenting that the car felt like driving a numb whale and that it looks like it's riding on casters.

I'm not saying large wheels and low profiles won't handle, but for outright grip and ride quality (at the cost of steering feel) you can't beat a smaller sized wheel and larger profile .

my point is that 4wds are designed for large wheels, the average car isn't. sure it's possible to fit 26" rims on a car, the topic isn't about what's possible. it's about what's your preference.

i thought the thread was called "how big is too big" not "whats your preference"
and in keeping on topic, my "preference" is what ever suits that car at the time one week might be 18" next might be 20"
