Dunno if this is a total noob question, but...
when people say they have a matching numbers car, does that mean that they have 'the' original motor, gearbox and diff? or they have the same spec motor, gearbox and diff?
i'm asking because i'm thinking of fixing the gearbox in my vk, which currently has everything original (besides old owner adding aircon). the auto shop said they do box exchanges, not rebuilding the old one. does this wreck the originality of the vehicle? or am i just being a little bitch? (i was probly going to get it kitted if i rebuilt it anyway).
Cheers...Jason.

Number matching - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Don't know if that helps.

Depending on whom you talk to, the definition of a “matching numbers” car may vary. A classic car purist might say that a truly original, matching numbers car will still have all the parts that it was manufactured with, including the tiniest nut and bolt. That would be very hard to find in an older car, so a more practical definition might be that all the parts will be either from the assembly line at the time of production or have been replaced with authentic NOS (new old stock) parts.
The most general use of the term “matching numbers” would mean that the engine and transmission are marked with the same sequence number as the chassis VIN number, and the rear axle/differential’s date code and casting number corresponds with the vehicle that's being checked.
i didnt think the gearbox numbers matched anywhere else. except maybe the paper that sits under the carpet?
i know when people say 'matchin numbers' for example on a genuine VL turbo. the numbers match both compliance plate, engine numbers and VIN number on the tower.
then again its not hard to re-stamp a block. cut the shocker tower and re-weld another one on and jump tags![]()
haha, yeah thats an option.
i was genuinely curious, you very occasionally hear of matching number cars and i just never knew exactly what they meant.
cheers guys.
