    Default First Car

Ok, For my first car I am looking at a VL or a VS. I want something reliable which doesn't burn a hole in my pocket. Also looking to do a bit of work to give it a little more oomph. So I am asking all you experienced commodore drivers/owners, What would you choose in my situation?

For reliability I wouldn't go with a VL. (and cause I plain dont like them) From experience my mates have had them turnned out to be crap heaps. VS are a good car, considered a VN?

Well I dont want to spend any more than 3-4 grand and I am not getting a VT. VT's are yukky.

A well maintained vl is easily as reliable as a vs mate

and also almost 10 years older?

with usually more kays. and people love to give the vl a thrashing. or how about when he buys it and discovers the extensive rust. that needs to be fixed to re register the car.

get a vs in good nic and itll keep going well for ya. id probably say vs over vr. but there isnt much difference.

i agree with you about the VLs you find the occasional nice one, but most of them are flogged out or have heaps of Ks, also i dont like the look of them but thats personal oppinion.

same goes for the VR/VS debate the only major difference is the motor and once again thats personal preferance, i like the buick motor, others like the ecotech.

ive had both. and the buicks shit all over the ecotec in exhaust note. but the ecotec definitely feels punchier especially when coupled with a t5

Yeah I'm not really to fussed in the difference between VR/VS, If I can find a good one in either I'd buy it. Can't expect something to flash. Thanks for the help fellas, Im pretty set on VR/S.

I voted VS, because they're newer. I've had 4 VLs, only 1 was a dud. The other 3 were very reliable. The most recent one i had for about 4 years, in that time all i replaced was a powersteering hose (and the CAS just before i went to sell it). That, a VL with almost 400,000 on it.

The other reason i voted VS is towards the end, i couldn't stand driving the VL instead of my VPs, although the VL was a poverty pack, the VPs weren't.

don't like VTs????? yeah the back lights arnt for everyone but you could spend a extra couple of hundred and get a VX, they are nearly just as cheap as a vt, or get a vx boot garnish. but seriously get a VS, the only VL you would wont is the turbo and they are all thrashed to hell

I'd go the VS, any car can be thrashed and any car can be looked after, it up to the you to decide when you speak to the seller and see the cars history. Just remember that a car that's always been driven at grandpa speed will be cleaner to look at but not necessarily better engine wise as they gum up when driven under 2000 revs all the time, forgetting about the motor, remember that everything is 10 years newer in the VS.

neither, vt or newer the vt and onwards feel so much nicer to drive than a vs, plus the newer the more reliable you would assume. as for a vl, i wouldnt dare, they look like they are 'falling' down the road not driving

i have had a vl and and a vs.i cracked the head in my vl.
although afta i got it fixed the car was great and reliable as my vs.
i would go with the vs though if you only have 4 g max to spend.
because it new and probley got less kays than a vl and its newer tecnolgy
and also i thoink will respond better to mods than a vl.

i never had much trouble with my vl but they are getting a bit long in the tooth now. VS should give a good few trouble free years and aren't as likely to be full of rust. The difference in time is the the difference in quite a few safety design changes also.

Unless i was going to spend a heap of cash to have hte most mint looking VL i wouldn't buy one these days.

Man, Thanks for your opinion but you really should go back to school.

I drive a VX quite often, I have also driven my mates VS and I didn't really feel any difference? I heard the VT's had quite a few problems?

vs over vl, iv driven both vl's i don't realy like how they drive, vs a lot nicer, i had a vr and that was awesome, i agree ecotech and 5 speed manual seem very punchy, but auto is still good too, vs will be better to tinker with a bit later too and get better results.

    +1 for VS,

can't really say much without the VL owners flaming me..

But you can get em in good nick for a good price, well featured, and they're a more comfortable/easier to live with all round car. No-one likes fixing rust all that much...

    VS FTW

As everyone else has said, the VS is newer so will probably have less problems and will be safer
