    Default Manual drivers

Just a question for all you manual drivers. If you have to come to a stop for a traffic light ahead, do you downshift or whack it into neutral and brake? What is more fuel economic?

I don't know whats more economical, but I always downshift in the Hilux. Both my parents just put it into neutral and brake. I dunno, I guess I just prefer downshifting because it makes me feel like I have more control over the car.

Ether way shouldnt matter econimically because neither way would be pumping more then idle fuel into the engine.
I down shift, I only touch the brakes in an emergancy or coming to the complete stop. Just a habbit and good to go if for what ever reason you need accelerate.

I always downshift on the rare occasions I'm driving a manual. Not sure why, it must have just been the way I was taught.

pays to always keep a open mind when aproaching traffic lights and preper to stop regarless.. down shift slowly.. rember in your car its more economical and cheaper to replace front brake pads than gear box's and clutches

Majority of the time I will downshift simple reasons being sound, more control but sometimes you get those days when you cbf changing gears so I just neutral it.

when my mate went for his p's he used to whack it into neutral and he got failed because u are meant to downshift so its always in gear so more chance of collision being avoided if u eed to act quickly plus its more economical on ur brake pads as well and also sounds better

I wa told the same thing, you must be in a gear at ALL times when driving, only when "making the car safe" is when you shiuld be in Neautral, i.e After parking etc. Instant fail if you sit at traffic lights in neutral with clutch out.

Downshifting is actually more fuel efficient.

If you watch what the injectors are doing, you'll find that when the engine is revving over about 2000rpm with no throttle, they actually shut off completely - that is, you're not using any fuel (fuel decel-cutoff is the official term I believe).

An idling engine doesn't use a great deal of fuel either, but its still more than none.
