ive decided that its probably a good time to get a new car as the head gasket has gone in the vrand its clocked up a few k's and i just want a newer looking ride. Ive been looking around at some vy's to ve's but want to know what everyone else thinks i could get and what too look out for when car hunting, any advice would be sweet. cheers
$17,000 could get you a decent Commodore. Are you after a V8 or a V6? $17000 could easily buy a VX SS if you're after a V8, or possibly a VZ V6.
im looking at a v6 and want to be able to put it on LPG as well. ive herd that anything after a 2003 vy the lpg systems cost quite a bit more, is this true? also im after a car with low km's say 80 to 100,000km's on the clock. are the VZ any good or am i better off getting a later revision of the ecotec engine in say a vy? also i might be rebuilding the engine in my VR, anyone know of some good business's that i can get new pistons, gaskets etc and the block and head refaced in SA? cheers

VY Berlina is the way to go. A calais may also be ok but it might just get a bit tight budget wise. The Berlian has good luxuries and if your lucky, you may find one that had the leather trim option put in. Dont forget to check your states LPG rebate. Here in WA its $3000 combined with the federal one.
If you are serious about the LPG conversion, then a VZ with the Alloytech V6 is no good, unless you buy a factory made one. For aftermarket installation, you would need to go no later than the VY Series 2.
Can't help you with the cost being more for 2003 onwards.
My VY Berlina Series 2 is probably indicative of what you can get if you search hard. It's worth more than 17k to me, but the red book probably only puts it at 14-15,500k
Leather, Calais exterior, factory 17's, 75,000km but not LPG. Good hunting.
For that price get a VE,newer the better id say.
