    Default non holden related question

wife has a ford corsair, (dont let her use the good one yet, still a fresh driver)

and it's got this rattle sound. ill describ it.

under idle, not in gear it will sit there, quite happly and idle up nicely. no sounds nothing.

when you put it in gear, it is fine, sits there, and idles.
put your foot on the acelerator, and it rattles its arse off like there is no 2morrow. it's almost like a pinging sound, or a loose roller rocker sound.

so i go ok, adjust the timing, i advance it, i advance the living crap otu of it, and the sound goes away, but cause the timing is advanced the car blows smoke, and isnt happy in anyway.

    any ideas?

what ive done so far, is ive checked timing, it was fine
replaced dissy cap, (i broke it having a spit) replaced leads, and replaced plugs all 8 of them. it is a 2ltr 4 cycle east west motor, for those not in the know (front wheel drive).

    Hi bud

Ive had a few nissan pintara trxs which run the same engine as the corsair,Im quite sure your problem is you have a worn or broken timing chain guide or tensioner. As you say you advance it the sound gets better,Its because your taking the slack out of the chain. These engines are known for timing chain guides to fail as well as tensioners? It could of also jumped a tooth due to slackness in chain and that could be causing pinging aswell.

check out the site antrx.com.au they have good info for your engine. From what i remember you have to drop the motor out from below to replace chain so it is a big job.
    hope this helps you

if pinking you should retard timing not advance, or put higher octain fuel instead.
you may allso have a lot of cabon on the piston's increasing the compression ratio.

if the car is carby type you can use the water trick to remove the carbon,
if not the high rpm trick will suffice.
