Hey guys,
Is it possible to register a high powered car while on your Ps (in Vic)?
Cheers, Errol.
EDIT, sorry no idea how this thread ended up in this section.
Have a look on the Vicroads site for the exemption form. I used to have it saved but seems it got deleted at some point. The form will give you an idea what hope you have.
What do you need it for?
EDIT: That is for driving it. You can register whatever you like on your P's, just not drive it

Yeha, the other guys are correct and if you want to drive it you have to justify your need for it, such as extra power needed to tow cars or some crap like that. Usually has to relate to your work. Need to fill out the appropriate forms
Lol. Imagine if they actually were that lenient. I sure wouldn;t be driving an ecotec.
This is more accurate. Generally it must be because you need to drive a 'high-powered' vehicle in the course of your work, or because it is the only option available to you and public transportation is not a feasible option.Usually has to relate to your work.
Yeah that was just an example you could use which would most definately get you no where in terms of getting an exemption lol
i've got an exemption for work i need to be able to tow metal and tools as i'm working at a steel works i had to get my boss to put up a letter detailing the reasons why i need to be able to drive them
p platers are able to drive work vehicles without an exemption during work hours only thou , but try explaining that to a TMU member .
Went thru this with vic roads about 12 months ago after one of our apprentices got run thru by the local TMU ticket was withdrawn by the TMU member .
This is Funny, Im On green Ps, And still can only Drive a V6, But I have a Full riders license and i can ride 1000cc Bikes just fine, scary as hell but i can handle the power of them (just) Rode the old mans Suzuki SV1000S and does 0-100 in 3 secs, and the power is instant as its a Vtwin, 60-100 is like a blink, such a rush. So a SS is slow to me lol, its still quicker then the VX but it gets me around well enough lol. But still no cant drive a V8 or anything like that.
It goes on your licence. When checked by police a category of 'Exemptions' comes up. It pops up even if you've applied for one and been unsuccessful which I see a lot of. I'm yet to actually come across someone with a high power vehicle exemption. I hear they're very hard to get.
Rightfully so as VicRoads needs to maintain a rigid process as you'd imagine, every P plate licence holder would be on their doorstep just so they can drive their mates or family members V8. There'd also be a heap who would have gone and bought some ridiculously powerful car before getting their licence without realising and now can't use the car so they desperately try to get an exemption but I don't think "I paid heaps (too much) for a car that I'm not allowed to use" would quite cut it.
Hey guys,
thanks for all the replies. Turns out your allowed to register a high powered vehicle on your Ps, just not allowed to drive it.
This worked perfectly for me, as i purchased my VX SS a few weeks before i got my full license, which meant i could insure it etc. Basically i couldnt drive it, but i got my dad to drive it when i needed it taken somewhere.
I was just worried that i would have to leave it un-registered till i got my full license, which mean no insurance in the mean time and would require booking the car into vicroad for an inspection rather than just taking in the road worthy cert.
Cheers
To the op,
As mentiond you can register anything you want, its driving it thats is issue. My car is specifically for work use. I have the need to tow heavy loads in excess of 2ton, and carry on a daily basis 500kg of tools etc. The vehicle is sign written at the rear with my trade and is registered under the name which my ABN is registered as.
For driving around weekends and what not i have a 800cc car, so me having a V8 is obviously not a power hungry woohoo issue.
Read the attachment, it will tell you all you need to know.
Here is the RTA link for anyone in NSW requiring a exception

its one thing to register them ... but i herd that insurance companies won't touch you with a 10 foot poll if you get in a prang in a high powered car on your P's, thats why i didnt get a factory supercharged berlina ... didn't wanna risk it
like i've herd of the, insure it in your perents name then put u down as a driver .... but i just don't think that'll work ...
Yes, All insurance companies don't want to touch anyone under 25, they seem to think you gain all these skills when you are 25, when there are much better drivers out there under 25 then alot of people with "experience" , they insure you but each year its 3000$ or more, so register it and get it insured in ya parents name, the premium goes up ALOT lot if you are a named driver, so you just stay a unnamed driver, and the excess it about $2000 for unnamed drivers instead of like 600$, but its still much cheaper then 3k a year. it still cheaper if you wright off a car each year lol. THis is what i found when i got the VX, 19yo, v6, yes we want 3500 a year, what so pay the car off every 2years? i think not.
Isn't it illegal in NSW to drive supercharged cars on your P's? If so then ygea, i can see why insurance wouldn't cover you. The guy i bought my car off in NSW was surprised i could drive it on P's legally.
edals, i'm not even 21 yet, i'm fully comp and pay under $3k with my supercharged vehicle. Whats this crap about insurance being over $3k until 25? You just need to know what your doing with insurance companies to get the best deal!
Well, yes it would be, but luckily i'm not paying $3k :P It's less than that. I think the first year i drove it it was up there somewhere. AAMI wanted $4kish and Commonwelath Bank.... $10k.
Supercharged engine suits my driving better than the V6 option too, so i save money on fuel.
