    Unhappy VR engine troubles

Hi all, I just have a quick issue for you and I'm hoping someone can help me out. Lastnight while sitting at a set of lights my car just started to make this awful rattle from the engine bay once the lights turned green I just nursed it home but once I was moving the noise went away. Just before getting home I heard a loud thud under the bonnet and I saw something roll away......without thinking to much of it I thought I just ran over some crap on the road. I looking at the engine this morning and all I could really see is the very bottom pully is missing a big bit of rubber from the inside, could this be the issue throwing the motor off balance and causing the rattle while on idle????

what the arrow is pointing at is the harmonic balancer. when they give out they crack or lose the rubber ring. In answer to your question, yes this is what would be causing your engine to rattle and knock like hell. Replace the balancer (about $80) last time i replaced one.
    Hope this helps.

Thank you very much Cruiser, would you happen to know where I could pick one of these up from, and are they pretty straight forward to replace or should I get a mechanic to do the job?

can be a bit difficult to replace if you dont know what you are doing. any good auto shop should carry them but be careful as there are two types avaiable.
the only prob ive had is if you are changing the CAS as well. The bolt can be a bit hard to remove as well as the pully itself. if you have a workshop manual that will tell you how to do it or i think there may be something in the how-to section if you have a cruise through there.

Yeah Harmonic Balancer will be your problem, they can be hard to do if you dont have the tools. There can be a lot of fiddling around and not much space to work in. Any automotive store will stock them.

I think from memory when I changed mine on the VR i got a mechanic to do it and cost me around 150-200ish.

Also be wary driving with it. Ive heard a few horror stories people driving around with them stuffed.

Yeah I've been quoted from a few places today and just for the harmonic balancer itself they are looking at charging me around the $150 mark then I'll have to find someone to install it.

Yeah wouldnt be anymore than an hour of labour so I rekon youd be looking at 200ish.

I think from memory there is a special tool that pulls it off nice and easy, which makes the job pretty quick and simple for a mech but makes it a bit of a bitch for you.

Haha now why wouldn't that surprise me at all.......so my next question is will the car still be ok to drive for the time being until I can get the harmonic balancer and a mechanic to install it??

When I broke mine I was told do not drive it around town and such. I was told to drive it to the mech and that was it.

Ive known of people driving it around town and stuff but its ill advised. Because the engine is shaking quite a lot, it will be doing damage, and if its anything like my VR, it was an absolute pig to drive and I thought the engine was going to end up dragging behind the car.

Haha yeah thats fair enough mine isn't shaking to badly at the moment as I have only lost maybe just over a quarter of the rubber and it only shakes when I'm on idle.

i still wouldnt advise driving it unless it is to a mechanic. Harmonic balancer pullers cost between 60 and 120 depending on quality. i have done a couple in my time and got it down to about 20 mins but i had all the right tools.
