Hey Guys,
i have a 2002 VX SS and i have noticed at times when i start it up i hear a squeaking sound this more so happens when its cold or if hasnt been driven in a while, i pointed it out to a few of my more car orientated mates and they seem to think it could be a loose belt or something, it makes sense as when it last happened i popped the bonnet and has a listen and it was coming from that region, the noise disapears within minutes of me driving it
does that diagnosis sound correct?
If you guys can think of anything else it could be let me know
thanks,
Hyper
easy way is to get a can of "stop squeel" and spray the belt. it works really well.
harder way (not hard) is to tighten the belt. is it power steer? check your belts by pressing on them with your finger, they should be tight, but still have a little bit of play. there will be a locking bolt and an adjusting bolt on the alternator or power steer pump whichever you need to tighten, loosen the locking bolt and tighten the other, then tighten thelocking bolt back up.
sorry i can be more help, ive no idea what your engine is like.
I was hearing maybe soap or wd on the belt helps is this true? Or the problem may even be the water pump?
...but you dont want the belt slipping. Go check the tension of the belts. It sounds like its just a noisy belt. Go check if its loose if it is give it a tighten, usually it has an indicator on the tightening bolt at where it should be.
This use to happen all the time in my VR.
Its the belt tension pulley.
I don't know what the fix is but it stopped after a couple a hundred metres so it didnt bother me much.
If it was the belt tension, it would squeal when you went full lock with the steering.
Also there is no manual adjustment from VR's onwards (maybe earlier) so I dont see how you can manually tighten the tension on the belt when thats the job of the tension pulley.
If you have ever changed a drive belt, you know what I am talking about. The spring load is extremely powerful.
thanks for your input guys much appreciated

LS1's have a spring tensioner, it's self-adjusting, not manually adjustable. There are three marks and an arrow on the tensioner (it's the top-leftmost pulley if you're facing the engine) and the arrow should be between the first two markings. If it's too far to the left, the belt is shagged.
Mine is doing the squeal thing at the moment, I am about 90% sure it's the aircon idler pulley, they have a reputation for doing it on these engines and I'm about to try and confirm it by taking the belt off and running it!(the air-con compressor runs on it's own belt, separate from the other drive accessories)
