Default supercharge, stroke or swap engine in my vs 5.0

I am debating as to whether i supercharge my 5 litre or have an engine swap. Im looking at putting in an ls engine. maybe a gen 3 block. i cant make up my mind but either one is going to happen before christmas.

Are ls blocks reliable? I know the 304 is tuff, torquie and hard to break. Would it be worth doing a rebuild and stroke or am i better off doing the big conversion?

I dont know anyone to do it for me so any help will be great

i've been debating the exact same question and heres what i came up with

LS1:- great motor if u dont buy one of the very first ones with oil consumption problems, can get serious power with minimal mods. if u are pretty handy with a spanner u could drop it in yourself. however the conversion kit + wiring it up wont be cheap, if u pay a shop to do the work it will cost a kings ransom. check out calaisturbo.com theres a few blokes on there who have done the swap

Atmo 304-355:- can make good power, however if u go too wild with cam size/exhaust etc u will have a loud, lumpy, cranky fuel guzzling thing that will attract cops like a moth to a flame. would be good for a weekend toy but could be too much hassle for a daily driver if u went too wild with the motor

Blown 304:- if your motor is in good nick bolt a CAPA blower kit to it and get around 350hp at the wheels, off boost it should still get good economy and not attract any unwanted attention. if u want more power get decent rods, pistons, intercooler and up the boost. i got quoted around $8000 for the blower kit, tune, fuel system and intercooler installed. takes about a week

i guess in the end it all depends on personal taste, how long u can have the car off the road for and how much u want to spend. best of luck with it

Or you could bolt a raptor on your self in an afternoon all for 6k or 7 k cant remember but good value think he was getting about 220 rwkw from a customers car.

    Good value

As is often the case, if your after power sell your current ride and pick up a stock Gen3 VX.... For the cost of upgrading your VS, you can get a nice VX and do a few simple mods (OTRCAI, Mafless Tune, Exhaust etc) and you'll be making more power than a blown 304/355.

I know you wanna make yours go faster, but honestly at the end of the day it just isnt worth it.

i have seen 304 turbo kits around for like $5000 this isent a superchager but it still pumps air into your engine

it would take a lot more than a few simple mods for a LS1 to make more power than a blown 355. You'd be looking at a cam change at least.
a LS1 conversion into an earlier model Commodore typically costs around 15-20k all up - dependant of course how much you do yourself. Factor in the entire conversion cost and it adds up very quickly.

A blown 304 or a 355 stroker will cost you around 10K and you'll be making more power than a LS1 with simple bolt on mods. As far as the authorities are concerned, it's a factory engine so no engineer reports/mod plates required either

Thanks for the replies. I still havent made up my mind yet. I have to get the water pump done next week, so am getting cam and lifters done at same time. I'll see how that goes, but I'm probably gonna go the terra charger kit from yella terra.

Yeah but the cost involved in building a Blown 355 engine arent exactly cheap either. He could pretty much sell his car now, buy a car with a LS1 in it do some mods and he would probally end up at the same place for the same price.

Depends what you want, do you want a big mean lumpy 304 or do you want to drive the car to work, will it be used as a daily.

    Hey mate,

Check this out 2001 HOLDEN UTE SS VU II Private Cars For Sale in QLD - carsales.com.au

    $13000

Has been chiped and tuned by BPS, Cold Air Induction, full exaust system with pacemaker extractors, heavy duty clutch.

Take this as an example, Id say that would be making around 220-240rwkw, 6Spd Manual.

So sell your car for $5-7k (not exactly sure what you've got). Add in an extra $7k and you've got a decent ride. You'll spend that $7k trying to get your ute as fast as this... and at the end of the day it's still a 12 year old car.

Im speaking from experience here... i spent $10k upgrading my VR and it was still fairly slow... and nothing special. Honestly buy something that someone else has already put a lot of money into.

    Cheers

yella terra's new whipple blower kit might be worth investigating, there's a thread on it around here somewhere. its not cheap at 7.5K plus bigger fuel pump/injectors and tune etc but it leaves the terra charger for dead with easy 250rwkw. im in the same situation as u (gutless stocker 304) and i reakon this kit might be the best fix while still keeping some drivability/economy
