hi all im having a problem with a straight 202, when i start it first thing in the morning i seem to blowing black slity stuff on to the garage door (im outside of door) and its also on the ground from the exhaust pipe back almost 1.5 meters away. then it starts to go all lumpy and blows blueish smoke alot of it sometimes it almost fills the air, im thinkin oil but im not loosing any (only a couple of drops over night). even when i push the accelerator down it still stays lumpy kind of splutters, there is also a smell to it sort of like its burning almost burn your throat smell. if i leave it for about 5 mins to warm up its fine not smoke nothing. any info would help.
sounds like the valve stem seals are stuffed, this would let oil into the cylinder overnite and cause smoke on start-up.
heres my ride, i know its not much but its mine

If it's blowing black smoke on start up and running erratically, it is likely to be running excessively rich. VB's had crummy old Bendix Stromberg carbies - is that what you are running?
Get the engine tuned pronto. It's not likely to be worn internally unless it has very big k's, but that wouldn't be black smoke, it would be bluish or white and the engine would be consuming oil. You say that it runs ok after a few minutes, so I'm sure it's the carb that's faulty.
As the guys said sounds like bloody good tune up bring the ol girl back to life...carby clean/tune ,new leads plugs, dizzy cap/points condensor...
Floor it and swerve driving skool
ok thanks i have a varajet 2 barrel on it. the smoke is a bluish colour but im not using (burning) the oil. i put carbie cleaner through it the other week because it seemed sluggish before i did it. the smoke thing has been happening for a while seems to be getting worse. the motor really hasn't felt right for some time to me tho, time for a new1 im wishing. im doing plug, leads this weekend should help.
Our old VC 202 does the same thing, blows a big burst of blue smoke on the first start of the day, it will be the valve stem seals letting oil seep into the cylinders over night.
On our particular motor I think it is the seals towards the rear of the motor that are the worst, our driveway is on a bit of a slope and I notice that when I reverse in it does not blow any where near as much blue smoke on the first start, probably as the oil in the overhead gear runs to the other end of the motor. The black splatter and rough idle I also have at times, I think it is a combination of the way the choke sets its self and the valve stem seals. Ours has exactly the same symptoms as yours, been like it for many years.
I may get around to replacing the seals one of these days.
