Hey,
I go for my P's in little over a month, Ive been counting down since i got my L's, which i had been counting down to get since i was about 14. Because of this i think i would have to commit suicide if i failed my P's test...
Because the date is getting closer im starting to get nervous, im very confident with my driving, however its a couple of little rules that im not sure on (mostly regarding indicating) so im hoping somebody here can shed some light..
When Reverse Parking what indicating do i need to do while reversing? I know that when im leaving the parking space i have to indicate right even though i will be going left, so oncoming cars can see im leaving, however what do i have to do with the indicators when im reversing?
Also 3-Point Turn, really have no idea about the legal way of performing this. ..
Thanks for any help
Seriously book one lesson with a driving instructor 50 bucks MAX for a lesson. Go for a drive with him he will not only answer your questions but also asses your driving ability.
Think about it you've been waiting so long yet you do not even know the basics to be frank with you. Don't risk failing.
Yer mate ive been for a lesson but it was in victoria (Im from NSW) , i live in a crap hole town where theres no driving instructor..Seriously book one lesson with a driving instructor 50 bucks MAX for a lesson. I recon i know what im doing, im just being over crucial, but i really do wanna go for a lesson before i go for my test..
i go for my p's next month aswell and ive had one lesson already and im having two before hand including one on the day. your instructor will pick up on things you are doing wrong or could do better and they will tell you how to do it properly
I was taught by my instructor that for reverse parking, you indicate approaching the park, then when you put it into reverse you turn the indicator off.
He also told me that for 3-point turns, you slow and indicate, turn once, put into reverse + indicator off, then back into drive/1st + indicator on again. Not allowed to touch gutter or peoples driveways, roadway only.
When i went with a instructor he said you could use the driveway, as long as you didnt go on/past the footpath, or where the footpath would beNot allowed to touch gutter or peoples driveways, roadway only.

Not sure about NSW, but in Victoria when in testing they will look for adjacent kerbs, meaning no driveways available to use anyway.
And just a point when doing a 3 point turn, on the reverse make sure you turn your head around to look where your reversing. Do NOT use the mirror! Thats the only point i lost in my test![]()
I was taught by my dad for reverse parking. Spent hours a few weekends a month in a carpark until i had it perfect.
When i went for my test, the instructor did it to show me, and knocked over his stick (lol) and i did mine perfect
Practice.....

Don't do it. They will fail you. Don't hit the gutter or go up the driveway. You shouldn't need to. You can do a 3 point turn without doing that. Yeah we all probably do it when driving on our own but when you go for your test don't do it coz i'm pretty sure they'll fail you for it. Also make sure you aren't too far from the gutter when parking coz if your more than a certain distance, they'll fail you for that too. You should find out what those things are that they will automatically fail you for if you do them. I can't remember now coz it's been ages since i went for mine. I'm not sure about the indicating business. I don't indicate when i reverse, if you're supposed to. I have no idea.

I recently just got my P's and thought I was a good driver on my L's. I soon found out that too pass and get my P's that I had to 'clean up' the way I was driving. E.g. the correct way to take off from a curb is Mirror, mirror, indicate, put into gear, pull hand brake up, mirror, mirror, blind spot then release hand brake and take off.
I suggest taking a lesson. Only took me 3 lessons before the instructor said I was good enough to do the VORT test and I passed first go. They teach you the correct ways of changing lanes etc. (the way you need to in your test) so might be good to learn correct first before going into bad habits before doing you test or whatever.
Sorry if I rambled on a bit, fair tired but just thought I'd put my 2 cents in![]()
Why make the first post to start a shit fight?...thats what gets p platers killed
When i had my lesson in victoria the instructor said that he has no doubt i will pass the test, The way some f you are talking about the parking makes me think i my have given it the wrong name?
im talking about the type of parking in picture A not B

It's been quite a while since I did my P's test, so the "curriculum" may have changed, but as I recall reverse parking wasn't a part of it when I did it.
Regardless, to answer your question, if you were parking in picture A (that's reverse parking), assuming you were driving from right to left ( <----- that way ) you'd indicate left as you pulled up to the spot, then you perform the maneuver.
For parallel parking (picture B) again, you indicate towards the kerb you're parking against as you approach it.
For 3-point turn, you only indicate for the first turn, so you indicate right, do the first turn, reverse (2nd turn) then drive away (3rd turn).
Like others have said, pay for a couple of hours of professional tuition, not only will it help you pass the test, but it'll probably teach you some useful skills, especially things like defensive driving. The test may seem like the most important thing right now, but being able to drive competently is much more important in the long run.

I want to get a lesson but like i said there is no driving instructors in my town..
After ive got my P's i want to do one of those driving courses, bcause driving is somthing im actually interested in..
when driving make sure you use your Rear vision mirror all the time (when i went for my lesson just before my test the instructor told me dont worry about the side mirrors just check the rear vision mirror every 10 or so seconds, before braking check the mirror while braking check the mirror while stopped check the mirror) to me it seems pointless to check the mirror while stopping and when your about to stop. generally speaking you need to stop for a good reason and whether you have a person behind you or not wont matter it's about the car in front stopping or the lights that are turning red that is the problem.
also make sure you don't Dry-Steer (what i mean by this is when you are doing the 3pt turn, while the car is stationery between turn points DO NOT steer - i got warned about that too) make sure your moving when you steer in the 3pt turn
as the instructor said, thank god for dry steering because it's useful but damn the instructors cause they mark you down for it.
when stopped leave the car in gear (if it's manual) with the clutch depressed (so you dont stall obviously)
best thing to do is go for a test about 1hour before your P's Test, just to refresh the memory and to ask any questions.
Maybe you could ring Vicroads and have a chat with them about it, also they may be able to help you with instructors in your area.
When parallel parking, I would say that you would indicate left as you are pulling over and leave the indicator on at least until you are in the parking spot, it will more than likely click off as you correct and move forward and back.
With a 3 point I think you should indicate left when you pull over and then once you are ready to start your turn, change to the right indicator. Unless it is a very tight street dont worry about using driveways etc and one backward movement should give you plenty of room.
This from memory is just what I do when I park/turn, I dont know if this is actually correct (after more than 10 years habit admittedly are not also the correct way of doing things, like hands at 10 to 2, never happens) but common sense is the main thing, show them you are a safe driver.
Yup, NSW.
Parallel parking is when you park alongside (parallel to) the kerb, reverse parking is what you do in a shopping centre (for example) where you reverse into a parking spot.
What you do in the test (or at least what I did) was reverse parallel parking (ie on the street, parking between two cars at the kerb)
