    Default Fixing Engine

    hey

i have a LH Torana with a High Performance 308 (L34) and it was driving perfectly in 1991, but then it got put in a shed and forgotten about because the owner was sent to the slammer, what would be involved in getting the engine back to running state.

I'm guessing new oil, plugs, leads and dizzy cap will be in order

its a 4 speed manual and the engine bay is infested with red backs if that helps.

    thanks

Are you talking about Unseizing the car engine?? its probley cheaper to buy another motor, or rebuild it..

does it run??? if it does it sounds like u have a good idea on where to start, give it a timing check.. change the oil 4sure if its that old..

Change the oil first, if it hasn't rusted inside (shouldn't have) then it'll be fine. Either way you have nothing to loose apart from a very rare L34 engine (doubt it's really a L34)

just turn it over it will start.

on some carby's they dry out, and the float and seals clumble. (carby rebuild)

i thought the same about the engine but it is, not out of the L34 torana's but the engine model (if thats what it is) L34, just like the stock 308 are L31

its just sitting now, but if i can get a chance next time im out there ill take lots of pics of the car, inside and out, but ill have to have someone with me because im pretty there is a tiger snake living in it because the back lights arent in it and i think it has got in there and is living in the oil bottles and rags and so forth left there from 1991.

Can you post a pic of the dizzy (with the cap off) and tell us the first few letters/numbers of the engine number? Am interested about this one.

this is what my holden v8 book says about the L34 option, but i don't know how correct it is..

there was 2 versions of the L34, a road and a track. the road version was just an L34 High Output and then you could get a 'racing pack' ontop of the L34 high output.

    racing pack had:

    - 4 barrel holley carb (780??)
    - modified exhaust system, 2 piece extractors
    - roller rockers
    - solid lifters
    - twin coil ignition (i spose thats why you asked to see the dizzy, coz its got a different rotor button)
    - bigger valves? (intake 1.95, exhaust 1.61)
    - 'slipper' pistons
    - higher compression (9.8:1)

this book i have is very ambiguous in what it says, really frustrating at times, so maybe half of that is right, the other half is just random stuff that they tried to do in development of the engine..

From memory (all my stuff is at home), that's more or less what I understood a L34 to be. I've got a list of casting dates and marks that you can use to tell what is what somewhere. The problem is that very few saw 1979 in tact let alone another 30 years! From what I understand they were a pig of a thing to drive on the street and the only way to get one was to "know" somebody at Holden and have a CAMS license - thus most had the wheels driven off them.
