All the big hoo ha about new road rules in Victoria..I went and checked them out on the web site..and bugger me...I must have the power to see into the future...because..I already knew all of these...perhaps some of the minor details have changed..but it all seemed like the same rules I have known about for years...stopping for Trams, when you cant cross an unbroken white line, driver responsible for seat-belts..all these rules I thought were already
brought in...mmm..very twilight zone ....
Way to go Vic Roads...how many million dollars went into promotions, printing etc to inform the public of rules we already have..pity the money wasn't spent on the SHIT inner city roads...that reminds me....does anyone know where I can buy a "pot hole early warning" detection device?
Cheers
Actually it bought into line many things that people assumed via (not so) common sense but wasn't actually law.
Reaper
yeah people have to be told to do things that are common sense for the minority of us these days, but most people wouldn't have even realised that the rules have changed..
on the subject of vicroads changing rules -
the rule that they are going to bring in that is gonna make it hard for some manufacturers is every new car registered must have a stability control program by 1st January 2011. now if this is not in line with the other states, a lot of people will be wanting to buy demo cars of the car that they want without stability control for eg nissan patrol 4x4s (are they passenger cars or light commercials, the utes might be light comm. but dunno about the wagons), lotuses (i dont think they would have stability control) etc. hmm.
You guys should know by now people don't have common sense, and they don't give a flying ****. In other words, they'll have to put these down probably everytime they update.
thats exactly the point i was trying to make, there will be a substantial conflict made with this new rule, and it looks like that kit cars such as the ones you can get for those cobra's and gt40's will be unable to be made anymore as they will be a 'new passenger car'
a change in the ADR's seems inevitable concerning stability control seems very likely in the near future.
People in today's society I was actually referring too lol.
How does that sound like an automated reply O.o
EDIT: It wasn't directed at all the young new drivers, or even the old ones, just the ones in particular that don't give a damn about safety, their car, etc.
You'd understand what I'm saying.
hmmm i have always thought (and my grandfathers who is 90 has said) not to cross a solid line, and when my sister was going for her licence about 4 years ago told me that you can drive over a painted island as long as your using that turn off. im really confused over the child seat restraint one, only for the fact they rate on a weight not age. my son stopped using a booster about 4-5yo, he was getting to big it (hes 4foot4 9yo now he always been tall considering im 5'3) i moved him over to a little car seat and harness his head was well above the rear seat and shoulders also, to me that was unsafe.
I don't get the new child seat laws either. But i think it goes on weight not age. My son is 3 (4 in Dec). Weighs about 26.5 kgs. Any booster seats that you can buy only have a recommended weight limit of 26 kgs which he exceeds but i think my son is too small to yet be out of a booster so i keep him in there. I'm not sure what the weight limit is by law. But manufacturers recommendation is 26kg. I'm not in Vic but i think a lot of those rules for kids seats are the same across most states. But i think it's just you know when your child is too big for a booster or when they're not big enough to be out of one. I'm going to keep my son in his for a while yet, regardless of weight limits. Coz i know it's safer.
Hi all...I was a driving instructor for 4 years..and have both the pola critereia (the rule book they look at when taking someone for a driving test) and a copy of the entire vic road laws..although they may not be the latest copies..and as I said.. there may be some "minor" cahnges..to the specifics..(wieght and age of children..specific use of mobile phones etc)..as far as I can tell... all the basics of these were DIFINATLY. laws prior to the lastest Vic roads.."New Laws" anouncment that was all over the news..
The tram one in particular is retarded..so..are they trying to say that prior to last week..you didn't have to stop..or not pass a tram when it stopped!..in fact the one part of the rule that not many people know is/was..if a tram stops at a red light...you cant even pass the tram once it has closed its doors (and sit at the line at the front of the intersection)..you have to wait until the light turns green before you move forward..
If someone wants to get a copy of the new rules and tell me where they differ in any significant way..then I will stand corrected...but..one of the main reason I quit being a driving instructor..was having to deal with Vic roads..when I was taking people for their license..I had a really good pass rate.. somewhere over 90%...it was still a pain then..but now (with the new system)..under 50% pass the test the first time..and I can tell everyone..its got more to do with the spastic way they run the test (that doesn't even meet popper assessment methods)..than it does a learner drivers ability...
Like many other Government run organizations..they are run like a JOKE..they take billions in revenue and give us jack shit in return..nothing new here..that's why I call the government..."the Legalized Mafia"...
There were some rather major changes particularly in relation to child restraints and rule no. 300 (mobile phones).
Was driving on a suburban street today. 50 kph zone, and came upon a section of road
that had a series of gentle curves in it, the road was average width and there was a continuous single line up the middle that ran for several hundred metres, problem was there were cars parked outside everyones home on both sides and the only way to proceed along the road was to drive up the middle like you normally would, which means technically I have crossed the continous line, ie: I had 2 wheels either side of the line, the street comfortably fitted 3 cars wide, but the line in the middle was a problem. So do they ban parking for all the residents or repaint the line to a broken one. Or is it if there are obsticles do you just cross the line anyway? Remember prior to the rule change it was just a line marking the centre of the road.
The "not crossing a solid white line" will catch a lot of people out who go over the Westgate everyday!

Aren't the lines on the west gate broken? Much like the lines in the new eastlink tunnel. It's unbroken, but made up of long sections - suggesting "we'd rather you didn't change lanes, but you can if you must."

They're only broken by the reflectors... White line... 5 reflectors... White line... 5 reflectors.... and so on. I could be wrong.

I go over that bridge at least four times a week. They lanes are clearly marked as broken lanes and you're perfectly able to change.
The continuous white line refers to lines in the middle of a road way seperating the directions of each carriageway.
I think you can be excused for that due to the parked (possibly illegally) cars. The white line rule is to stop u-turning in unsafe places.

Correct, that's always been the way but they've never been clear on other issues regarding dividing lines.
we had a vic roads guy at our weekly CFA meeting on monday night, and there is alot of new things.
The new line marking and parking ones are going to take a litle bit to get used to, but we will all get there in the end... it will just take some people a very long time.
the single white line is mostly on the entry and exit lanes on the freeways (from what our diagram showed the other night)
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.
