G'day everyone,
i tried a search but could not find the answers to my questions, sorry if this has already been covered. I have a VS V6 with ABS and want to do the twin piston brake upgrade. My questions are:
Would i notice a difference with just calipers/rotors? Or would i need to do master cylinder too?
I am mechanically minded, would it be do-able at home with basic tools you'd use on a car?
What does the 'Full' upgrade have in it apart from new calipers?
Thanks everyone.![]()
Not to shabby about the other questions, but you would definitely notice the difference. My brother (Dirbatua) re-did his brake system on his VR Calais and apparently it made a huge difference.
I believe it would be do-able with at home basic tools, but I would think it depends on what exactly you're changing, people correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks for the help there mate. I'm pretty set on doing calipers but not sure if its worth the time/money/effort to do the rest.
Cheers!
Yea I think it would be easy enough to do yourself, I'm pretty sure there is a how to thread in the "how to" section. The only thing I think that might be a little bit challenging would be bleeding and changing the brake fluid, other than that the caliper swap over would be pretty straight forward. Have a look in the how to section.
Edit: Found it for you, have a squizz.
How To - VT Brake Upgrade
Thanks for that betts, the guide looks pretty good. i'm absolutely rubbish at bleeding brakes, so i would do it once myself then take it to the brake mechanic to get it all done properly, so that shouldnt be much of a problem.
How much do you usually pay for the parts?
Cheers.
Ok, well as far as I understand if you are putting them on a vs then you will need a set of hub rings, which sit onto your hubs and adapt to the vt rotors. Hub rings are around $40 for a pair. You could probably pick up a set of second hand calipers for the front for around $200-300? Rotors, it depends if you want to go slotted or just standard, I have just bought a pair of new slotted vt rotors for $180, so that might give you some idea.
i just finished doin my vt upgrade and master cylinder tonight.
i got calipers, slotted rotors, adaptor rings, brake pads, and custom hoses for from a guy who had bought them off ebay but never got around to fitting them. the kit goes for $550 on ebay.
they were better, but very spongy pedal. kinda had to double tap the pedal to 'pump' it up.
got my 15/16" master cylinder bored out to 1", and i'm running dot 5.1 high performance brake fluid.
bloody awesome now.
as for tools, need to get wheel off, 19mm socket to get caliper off, hammer/mallet to tap old rotor off, 10mm spanner to undo the bleed nipple, and its a 12 or 13mm to undo the lines. so if you got some basic tools, you should be right.
Cheers for the help here.
Thanks wamboin looks like i've got all the tools
and i have found calipers for $100 (they are from a vx, its the same yeah?)
then i'll get some good pads/rotors off the gsl rally sport sponsor i think
is it hard to do the master cylinder? looks a bit hard.
Cheers.
is it worth doing the master cylinder.. for the money you spend and the performance you get?
How much is the master cylinder usually?
sorry for all the questions here.. i have found a vt for wrecking i'll have a look on the weekend, might be able to strip what parts i want off it.
Cheers.
your brake pedal won't feel right without doing something to the master. gotta push more fluid to push 2 pistons instead of one, so you gotta push you pedal in more.
ok, ive been doing some google-ing, and apparently the vs v6 has a better brake booster from the factory, and a vt master cylinder will bolt straight up to it. all you gotta do is bend the brake lines around to suit, and put on the vs master cylinder reservoir.
Thanks heaps for the help mate. looks like i'll go with the vt master cylinder too, i'll be doing it all in the school holidays in a few weeks.
Thanks again for all the help.
what part of canberra you in? i could give you a spin in the car to see how the brakes go..
That would be awesome if you could mate! I live in Karabar (queanbeyan) .. i go to school in Narrabundah too.

Just some friendly advice, might want to edit that post and send him your number in a pm, I would'nt recommend putting your mobile on a public forum, don't know what people could do with it.
haha yeh i smashed the wagon up in queanbeyan just before the roadworks going to captains flat..
Driving a POS vn auto sedan now till i buy a vr/vs, already pulled the manual out of the wagon last weekend, so you can guess what i'll be using that for lol. I'll def keep an eye out for your ride though
Power is measured in DECIBEL
ah gay haha. if you are interested my mate might be selling a pink VR that has rebuilt motor but needs new gearbox?
