GME are a good brand. Our trucks at work all have uhf's and I reckon GME are the go. Have got one in my VY, it's a GME TX3220. Paid $320. Uniden are a pretty good brand also.
I mounted my antenna on the side of the boot because there was a phone antenna on there when I bought the car, I used this existing bracket. The antenna itself I got off a mate for nothing, it's 30cm and great for what I use it for. I would be shopping around a bit and get one that's not too dear!

yeah gme are the go i am looking at tx 3100 $230, tx 3340 $450 plus 100 for 6db antenna or tx3320 $400 with antenna the tx 3340 has remote mic so can stick it where cant be seen but bit pricey. where abouts would you stick it without blocking 2nd 12 volt?

yeah i'd go for either gme or uniden, as for the aerial they work by transmitting downwards then reflecting off of the metal below it, so anywhere where there's a nice baseplate, i used a bracket and mounted it next to the normal aerial on my vl,

the size of the aerial length, can be tuned to your particular unit/length of coax/amount of reflective metal

using an swl meter, basically buy a normal heliwhipp long aerial and then attach the meter in line with the aerial and the radio and start chopping bits off the top (tuning) untill you get a nice readout on the meter

not allways is the thickets longest aerial the best, my friend had a huge one, found a small one one day and put it one to see he could hear stuff clearer and from further away then before

GME for sure, we have over 20 and they're the go, heaps better than the unidens. I bought a uniden once and ripped it out after 2 days, heap of shit.

you can actually buy non-ground dependent aerials that dont need the metal underneath them

My GME is mounted on the side of the console next to driver's left knee. Dunno really which is best place for antenna, I like mine where it is on side of boot, doesn't get in the way. Ideally on the front of the car will give you more reception behind you as the steel body of the car acts as part of the antenna, ie mounted on the back will give further signal out front, centre of roof would give even coverage all round. I doubt this will make much difference for general highway use though, as the greatest distance I ever need to talk over is about five k's.
I only ever use channel 40 for road reports etc, so my set up is fine for what I need.
