Not true. Lidar is just a tool in the arsenal. Plenty of people have been successfully charged for speeding based on nothing more than the officer's word that (s)he observed the accused doing approximately XX speed, based on their judgement or the speedometer of the police car.

You are right that if you can show reasonable doubt the magistrate will probably dismiss the case, and it will surely be easier to do that if the police have less evidence (such as a lidar reading), but it's by no means impossible or even unlikely to be charged just based on testimony.

Can anyone (someone who actually knows, not just what they have heard) tell me the difference between a lidar and radar? Cheers

Put simply, a LIDAR uses a laser beam, a radar gun uses a radar wave. They both operate on a similar premise.

Thanks danja. I got caught by a lidar, and he did show me what speed I was doing and it was recorded (that was the first thing he told me, about the conversation being recorded and that I could use it in court).

Dry your eyes Princess and cop it sweet. Currently you are in denial, clearly you have been crusted speeding and you are clutching at straws.

I don't think any states in Australia are still using radar guns.

Most cops will show you the reading, but if I remember rightly they aren't legally obligated to do so. Recording the conversation on the other hand I believe is legally required that it be disclosed.

    ???

They dont have to show you anything!

Hwy patrol MUST have the speedos calibrated and tested every 6 months. A police officer is considered an expert in court, and all he has to say is that that you were above the speed limit by "at least x amount", as he was known to be travelling at y amount. They don't need to show any read outs.... and if anyone thinks they are getting off on a speeding fine by asking for it to be shown to them is well.... asking for it .

And to the original poster- you be stuffed mate. Don't even bother wasting your time going to court. And your little 'witnesses' in the back seat are worth precisely jack.

And I know I sound like an old fart... but a P plater doing 155?!?! All I can say is I'm glad you be walking for the next few months at least, sorry.

I was under the impression they didn't have to show you regardless of wether you request it or not, but I'm prepared to be proven wrong.
