    Default Wheel nut caps/covers...?

    Hey guys

I've just bought a set of VY S pack rims for my VX acclaim. I don't mind the rims, haven't seen them on a VX before though so am waiting to see how it looks.

Anyway from factory they came with those black wheel nut covers or caps, which i reckon make the rims, they look good. So i've been trying to source some and have been told they're only OEM parts, there's no aftermarket ones. Holden want $3.20 each for them, making $64 for 20 little caps, plus I'll need Wheel nuts too... not cheap.

What has everyone else been doing? Is there somewhere I've missed that i can get cheaper ones? haven't been able to find any black ones on ebay either, there's a set on grey ones at the moment but they don't look as good as black.

If you have locking nuts bare in mind the covers will not fit over these, so you will need only 16 covers which comes to $51.20.

So do the covers just fit normal wheel nuts? Cos I just called Holden and was told the nuts have to be the right ones, with a shamphered bit or somethin? I'm not sure if my stock wheel nuts will even fit, in which case it's $3.50 per wheel nut as well.

I don't have lock nuts at the moment, so even if I run lock nuts I'll have to buy them too.

Not sure if they fit other holden wheel nuts, but i cant see why not, there still the same size.

Mine came with my grange wheels when i bought them, so didn't have to pay for them
Also, they DO fit over lock nuts, they just stretch abit, meaning if you try and use them on a normal nut afterwards, they will just fall off.

It depends on what style of nut you use when you fit your wheels. Holden has used a number of different types depending on wheels fitted originally. The photo below shows the early style of plain wheel nut, the later type fitted with alloys and an early Commodore nut used on VB's etc.

You can see that the early style nut is shallow and lacks the depth of the alloy nut, which is shouldered to provide a larger seating area. The covers will fit on ordinary nuts, but won't stay onbecause the early style nut is too short and the contact area for the covers is inadequate.

The early style Commo nuts use the same thread but are larger in external diameter. It's possible they may not fit within the recess in the alloys but if they do, you might be able to use them as they are closed at the end and already painted black.

    Sorry about the crappy photo.

if you want some for free just do to some car auction place and walk around and see if any cars have them and just pop them off and put them in your pocket, probally better to take them off a damaged car so no one really notices them missing

Do they come off easily? I noticed someone selling removal tool on eBay, although it doesn't look like you'd need one.

Have people had them knocked off their cars?

    Never had them stolen.
I can't get to mine without the tool. WH Grange wheels. Other wheels might be easier.
Note the locknut (the nut closest to the bottom of the wheel)

The factory supplied removal tool is a little plastic crawdad that hooks into a groove around the nut cover. If you don't have one, small screwdrivers can lever the cover off some wheels but not those like Stealthy's where the nut is deeply recessed. Some can be fiddly to remove, even with the tool. They won't fall off the proper nuts. (ie the middle one in my picture above.)

Nice one. Cheers for the input guys. Looks like I'll just have to buy the caps from a dealer along with the tool for them. Trying to source the nuts from somewhere second hand, but wreckers don't seem very helpful with that!
