Hi folks,
Just got a quick question. What would 170bhp equate to Hp and Kws in a VK Commodore Sedan?
Thanks,
About 125.8 KW or 168HP. I think? Math not my strong point lol
bhp is the symbol for Brake Horsepower. It is just a way to measure the horsepower a vehicle. Basically it is just a brake attached to the shaft.
Since horsepower is the power output, and brake horsepower is the effective power output, bhp may be slightly lower, but they are the same thing.
A 1.5 bhp engine is a 1.5 hp engine.
hp to kw is 0.74
edals is right on the kw
HP is the pure power that the engine makes (eg on an engine dyno).
BHP is the power the engine makes with all accessories attached (EG alternator, water pump, power steering pump).
You almost always use the BHP value, as you never have an incomplete engine in the car (Unless its a drag car, in which case they have electric water pumps, no alternator and no power steering).
170bhp is probably about ~180hp, but again this is a useless value.
170bhp is around 127kw (give or take).
Depending on gearbox (auto/manual) and a few other things, its probably making around 95rwkw. (hard to say).
Also, where did you get that figure?
If it was making 176bhp from the factory (however many years ago) its probably now making 130bhp or less. Engines will lose power over time, unless you basically rebuild them.
A dyno is the only way to accurately determine how much power is being made.
You should be able to do 3 passes on a local dyno for about $100. Sometimes various places have "dyno days" where its $50 to get a read out.
Cheers
