    Default daylight robbery...

A lot of you probably know this already...

I was shocked to find out about our car prices today when I was talking online to an acquaintance in the USA.

In 2006, he bought a new Monaro (Pontiac GTO) V8 for $31,000US (Approx $35,000-$36,000AU). We retailed the equivalent model for $60,000AU. Granted the currency may have differed then yet its still a huge gap.

It was a pretty big shock to see that we pay about $20k more for a car we export overseas.

Your post seems to list redbook, redbook are about as accurate as wikipedia.

If its that big a deal, import one from the states and get it converted to RHD, and save moneys

There are probably a few more variables to that. Wasn't that when Holden had just started exporting? They were probably cutting prices to get a share of the market for the new Pontiac platform. Pontiac might not hold the same position as Holden does over here (i.e. only Ford and Holden are dominant "local" manufacturers over here, America has many more). Dunno, could be tons of things.

The GTO doesn't have the climate control, cup holders etc or side impact airbags like the Monaro. Having said that you will find that the parent co (GMNA) had the ability to pull strings on its lesser brands....in this case Holden. You will see this won't work in reverse when the Camaro hits the showroom floors in OZ.

Rule of thumb on the internet, never refer to redbook for car values, ever.
