Hi Guys,
My brothers Toyota Sportivo has gone into the Mechanics as it has some tappet noise. The mechanic has told me that some of the lifters need to be change (up to 16 lifters at like $27 a lifter) + labour. Before he knows how many lifters need to be changed he will have to measure them up once the engine cools.
I was wondering, apart from all the noise it will make, if i don't change them is it bad for the engine?
Thanks,
Adam

Any internal noise an engine makes that is left unchecked is bad for the engine, not to mention what your brother may/or may not do to you!
How old is the car? If its no more than a few years old, I couldn't see how it could of worn anything out yet?! Toyota's normally have pretty well built engines (apart from that aweful 4cyl in the SV10)
I would suggest asking around before i paid someone $60hr+ to pull the heads down and replace the worn tappets, and whatever else they may have damaged.
Just a thought,
how long since he changed his oil? It could be simply a case of the hydraulic tappets being gummed up. I would change the oil imediately, drive it gently and get it warm and see if the noise reduces. You may also get a oil additive for additional varnis removal.
The new oil will get very dirty and should be changed again, flushing out the grunge.
For what its worth.
sure if will be very bad
any noise from the engine should be repaired immediately
other wise more parts will have problems
