Default Car repairmen can be some of the sleaziest people

Their absolute lack of decency has driven me to learn how to do most basic car maintenance things myself (AutoMD and Yelp have been lifesavers). I hate going in to them for things that i can’t do, because they are almost always pricks about their work.

What’re some bad repair shop stories you have?

I find it very difficult to find a mechanic these days who I would trust. Therefore I do it all myself, but will have to get my suspension safety checked sooner or later, but will the guy say "yeah it's all stuffed, $700 to fix it". Or something of the like. Who do we trust in this day and age?

Aww comon we're not all that bad . But yeah as I work primarily on the electrics side of things I see dodgy stuff on all sides of the trade, be it panel beater, mechanics even people in my own line of work. However my company has been around for 57 years, I like to think we're doing something right with customers .

I would say there was this mechanic in Tamworth, Biker, hotrodder kind of guy, but hell, 200% genuine, would fix yr car and itemise the work and hours on paper, give recomendations forlike what your car might be needing in the future...much to him an awsome mechanic.

Mind you I have also met many that are quite good and give free help..Big city= big money.

I have met some awsome mechanics, it is just that the price of labour is expensive and lets face it, 99% of people who want their cars fixed do not know shit and prefer to pay for the work.

A car these days is an expensive thing to own...(else be like be and be a wreckers reg)

my mate got his car looked over and a basic service for 700 mates rates. When he got it back both strut tower nuts were not even finger tight. We scored a spanner that was still in the engine bay and alot of other things where not done up aswell. Sure happy i work on my own cars

This dodgey thing about Mechanics being licensed theives is very true when then they take on an import car they know nothing about and knowing that there is no info or support from Aussie dealers of the same brand make it conspiracy to defraud the customer in my opinion.

I have seen this with Toyota Surfs and the horror storys that come from owners.

The mechanics basically take the vehicle, knowing nothing about the issues in an attempt to learn about changing sensors and not fixing the problem and keeping the vehicle for day or weeks then giving the owner the vehicle back with a $700 or $1500 bill and the problem is not fixed!

Did you charge them by the hour and still not fix their 'problem'? LOL

To be fair in relation to my previous comment on this "dark" subject, I will say that rural and country mechanics have more to loose than their big city peers.

It is very true that big city mechanics can depend on the city mentality and don't care if they get a bad rap, because there is a non-stop supply of work ever day. In the small country towns, every one knows everyone and anyone ripping off customers gets talked about and probably fixed up after work too, because everyone knows where everyone lives!

It would more like a country town mechanic to knock you back when you turn up with something they cant handle and for the big city mechanic to say OK, we will have a look, leave the keys with us and that = big $$$$$$$$! Not all big city mechanics are rorters, but there is just too many and they out-number the good guys!

Well, thats the problem right there....They own a Toyota Surf. Absolute shit boxes, why can't they just buy a Hilux FFS? We know a fair bit about them and we still shudder when we see one come in the door. In fact, we've got one in our shop right now with a stuffed engine....

Not all mechanics are rogues, it's more the minority IMO.

I trust the blokes at my Holden Dealer, always ring me and checks to see if i want to spend this much to replace parts and if something else needs to be replaced. I do all servicing my self, brakes, shocks etc, but i had to get my engine mounts replaced on the weekend, and had them done in about 50 mins, bit expensive but get good customer service from them, And they ring me a week latter to check if everything is going well, I took the VR into them for a trans flush as i did not have the time to do my self, and told me other stuff that had to be done and was recommended, But they don't just do it like a lot of other service centres, And you can even watch them work on ya car through the waiting room windows
