Most of us auto elecy's don't like having to wire up engines to cars that arn't meant to be there... it's a pain in the ass with little to no profit and lots of agro. I've done 1 in 5 years, and your mate simply needs to know that with jobs like that, they're on a "when I can get to it" basis. So he'll need to be without the car for a few months, it's simply not a week job.

But I'm in Sydney and of no help .

That says it all about licensed business operators!

I guess if the wires are not the same colour and the plugs and Scotch Locks don't reach, then it's too much drama! Piss week I reckon. (I agree there is no profit in it, just a labor of love!)

I got no electrical trade to my name, but I found it easy to understand 2 differnt wiring diagrams and add and solder and wires to make conversions work!

VN-Commonwhore - your barking up the wrong tree mate. You need to ask for a "car enthusiest" not a business operator!

    That is all!

And that's why we hate seeing your type of cars that have chopped wiring and no real order to anything. It's always just a mess.

That being said, I'm very much an enthusiast, I can admire other peoples rides, I love my cars and my motorbikes, but at the end of the day yes it is a business and as such profit is what makes it operate, if a job doesn't earn me money (not saying alot here, but some) then there's no point working on it. I've worked on mates cars hours on end (I am as well right now) for free. Woolworths don't provide food at 5c markup becuase they have a labour of love that people need to eat, we'd see alot less hungry homeless people. This is life, get with it.

^^^^ How is getting paid whatever abhorrent amount you guys charge an hour for wiring up a trailer, or whatever you consider a 'normal' job,
any different from getting paid hourly to wire up an ls1 in a vn?
Its still the same flat hourly rate. So sad that some people dont/can't take pride in thier work and try something different for a change,
wiring up a LS to run in a VN could generate you an absolute shedload of future work? Do you not think of these things?

And just because we aren't trade qualified in your field does not mean that our cars have chopped wiring, or that we can't do a competent job.

To the OP, get the VN to Victoria and I'll wire it up for you. I would kill to tackle something of that magnitude

** It would only take an hour or so to get it running.
Getting everything else to work though, would be far longer.

That's understandable from a business person, just not interested in anything that requires a bit of thought and research compared to "plug and play" repairs with a set hourly rate, even if it takes half the time, the bill is the same or more depending on the home situation and the weather!

With all respect, there is more to engine conversions than the in the whole world of a standard Auto Electrician, as they are often not doing the whole job themselves.

As Veriton will/should know, doing a proper conversion requires wires to be chopped, stripped, twisted, soldered, insulated and bound together with the type of plug suited to the new engine. Why would anyone want an over priced "plug and play" adapter harness, when they do stuff like grind off engine chassis mount brackets and weld on adapter brackets and get driveshaft lengths modified for a foriegn type of engine? There is no chance EVER of me putting a Toyota engine back in my Hilux, so a V6 Commodore engines will be fine! I did it properly by chopping and soldering.

It's not a trailer plug getting installed either, so none of this SCOTCH LOCK crap. I'll leave SCOTCH LOCKs for the licensed Auto Electricians to generate more future work for themselves or their buddies!

"Having said that" I just did another rush conversion and there are chopped and insulated wires in a mess, looks like a half completed birds nest next to the fuse/relay unit , but it didn't fail a 3000 Km round trip. When things settle, I might just tidy thing up a bit with more lecy tape and it should be good for another 15 years!

    Sorry about the rant guys!

Don't get me wrong, I do alot of jobs that require thought and research, for example we had a peugout 307 in that wouldn't start every now and again and it got worse and worse, we had it in for about 2 months (working with it on and off) trying to figure it out after it had been to 6 other mechanics, then peugout dealership who in turn brought it over to us to fix. Turned out stupid french decided to make a 2 stage flywheel the back part is mounted on rubber spacers, which "droop" causing the crank angle sensor not to read correctly. I enjoy these jobs, they're a challenge.

However for me and most other auto electricians I know, we don't enjoy engine conversions. I've done 4 engine conversions, 5 complete vehicle rewires in 5 years, it becomes monotonous and alot of the time I just don't have the time to work on then. More important vehicles come first.
