Default How to remove airbag detonator?

I've got a VS non SRS steering wheel on my VS at the moment, but I also have a VS airbag centre which I want to put on instead (they look and feel much better than the non airbag) but I want to remove the detonator to ensure that it doesn't inadvertantly go off/inflate. Just have it as a 'dead airbag'.

So how do you remove the detonator?

By tinkering with it your liable to set it off, just cut the wires short and cover them in electrical tape, should do it.

the airbag trigger/module is mounted in a box under the seat.
All the dangerous bits are contained within the airbag itself.
If you've removed the airbag, the trigger is completely harmless. It's nothing more than a switch
Only problem you are going to have is the airbag light will stay on if the airbag is removed. Either remove the warning light from the dash or disconnect the main connector from the module under the seat.

    Fair enough mate.

My thoughts were to cut the wires and tape them as previously said, and attach the wires for the horn, so basically it's just a steering wheel centre with only the horn pad wired up. It's a non airbag car so there is no box/switch/trigger.

You would want to make sure you informed the next owner if you sold the car that it did not have an airbag fitted, not sure if there are any legalities involved here?
If some one bought the car thinking it was airbagged equipped and had an accident.

I'm keeping the non SRS wheel centre, if I sold the car, I would return the car to 'normal'.

Regardless it isn't illegal anyway....(as far as I know)

Well I have the center now, I am still wondering how to plug it up since there are 2 separate plugs for the Airbag center as opposed to the non Airbag.

I know a few people have done the swap, anyone care to enlighten me on the best way to do this?

It's not required to remove it. If you look into the SRS plug, you will see a "shorting pin" which automatically joins both pins in the plug together, thus preventing it from going off. With this pin still in there, it cannot physically be set off by anything.

Oh yeah DO NOT DO THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. You're better to take the plug out, to allow the shorting pin to do it's job. By just cutting wires you're leaving it open to accidental detonation.

As for wiring it up. The plugs on the back of the airbag should be black and yellow (for memory), yellow is airbag, black is horn. If that's not the colours, then look for the short pin, and it should give you a fair idea. then plug in the horn plug and use the wires coming out of that plug to wire up your old hold wires (if ya get what I meen).

Thats the back of my airbag centre, not sure which wires to start tinkering with. Excuse my noobiness but electrics have never really been my strong point.

The center plug, in the center of the silver metal part, is your airbag, leave him alone. The other two plugs are your horn plugs, one for the left button, one for the right. Both of those are fair game to play with .

Ok Sweet. I thought it was just those wires I had to deal with. Only thing to work out now is how to disconnect the double plugs on the airbag centre and wire it up to a single plug to fit the non airbag, single plug connection on my loom. Photo's shown below

Alright, here's how you wanna do it...

CUT YOUR WIRES HERE, MAKE SURE TO LEAVE SOME ROOM AFTER THE PLUG, SO AS WE CAN JOIN ONTO THESE LATER ON, SAY ABOUT 4 INCHES FROM THE PLUG WILL SUFFICE.

    How to remove airbag detonator?-airbag2..jpg

NOW WE WANNA CUT CLOSE TO THE PLUG HERE, SO AS TO GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH WIRE TO PLAY WITH FROM THE HORN PADS.

    How to remove airbag detonator?-airbag-3..jpg

NOW WE SHOULD HAVE 4 WIRES ON THE STEERING WHEEL, AND 8 ON THE AIRBAG CENTER, JOIN 2 PURPLES ON THE AIRBAG CENTER TO ONE OF THE PURPLES ON THE STEERING WHEEL, AND 2 BLACKS TO 1 BLACK ON THE STEERING WHEEL, DO THE SAME FOR THE OTHER SIDE.

DOING IT THIS WAY WILL STILL ALLOW YOU TO HAVE A PLUG TO DISCONNECT THE AIRBAG ASSY FROM THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN REQUIRED.

AND COMPRENDO, YOU SHOULD HAVE A HORN, IF NOT THEN SOMETHING ELSE IS WRONG WITH THE AIRBAG CENTER/ HORN CIRCUIT.
